I was making up future divideneds with the wife by walking around IKEA with her and saw a small paring knife they sell for $6.99. I thought it was a comfortable handle and from what I could discern in the store, it looked like it might be a decent steel too. I snagged one and made a kydex sheath for it. Gonna test it over the next few weeks and see if it's a winner or not. I stole the idea from my Dad who used to steal my Mom's paring knife when headed out fishing. He always claimed if he had a good sheath for that knife, it would disappear from Mom's butcher block. I love my high dollar knives but there's no reason to let lack of funds keep anyone out of the Bushcraft fun! Oh and before anyone asks, No I am not offering these FS. Just use the idea and make yerself a nice sheath for whatever you can find out there :)

I have seen several knifes in the $10 range at WalMart, Target and other stores that would probably be good woods knives. Good idea!

I've always like the size and 'feel' of a good kitchen knife. That's a particularly nice looking one. The main problem is they are mostly made of sucky steel that's just a little too thin. I would be interested in hearing how it works out. Specs?

The handle looks quite hand filling. I usually see things in the store, but I am never sure of the steel. Maybe i'll pick one up to see if I like it or not.

The handle on that one looks much better then most of the paring knives I see. I'm told Victorinox ones are a hot commodity among fishermen as well. Thanks for posting on this one! Especially from a maker ;)

Kitchen knives!

I have a couple of 30year old kitchen knives that I have not used in years, which I want to 'convert' into bush knives
The first is a 9" Rogers Sheffield Butchers knife, like an Old Hickory but thicker.
The second is a Sabatier Meat Cleaver, which has the weight of a small hatchet!

Going to take them out to play and see if they baton!

I found a Kabar kitchen knife for 50 cents at the goodwill. I cut it down to 3 1/2" blade and it's a cool user.
