I am one of those guys with a ton of knives but no knowledge to match them. I have a couple survival books and I have purchased a lot of kuks because of the survival book I have. the tool is used for making bowls, shelter and other stuff. I am a decent chopper because I use it a lot but I don't use the snap technique. I have heard of it vaguely. I have a lot of bowies for batoning which I do and I find batoning with kuk hard. I love my old spear point rd9. the handle hurts but the blade is great. I have boughten several busses but have not replaced the rd9. I have battle rat that needs to be sharpened better and I think it could replace the rd9. I really want a cgbm because anything thicker is too heavy for me. we will see if that happens. I am looking for a small knife and am considering the brkt kephart. for someone with little expeience is it a good pick and hoow does it compare to a bravo or gunny. I figure any would do. I have some nice knives like the rc3 and a yard keeper but I am looking for something more bushcraft and traditional maybe.

I should mention the rd9 was replaced by the battle rat but later set aside until it is sharpened better.

I own a brkt lil nessie but I was not too impressed. I tried making fuzz sticks and I found the edge was too thin maybe?? the edge rolled makinf flat spots on the edge.
I have tried some of the stuff here, so I guess I have some knowledge but little real experience beyond chopping and batoning. I would like to learn more so I will probably frequent this forum more.

Your RC-3 will do you fine. Its one of the best bushy-blades of the RC-line up because of its 1/8" thickness and 30 degree grind from factory. As you mentioned, using your knives is going to give you skills rather than buying new knives. Check out some of Tonym and Rescue Riley's youtube posts. They have some where they detail different knife holds and carving methods.

Get into a habit of carving and whittling with your RC-3. Do it two or three times a week. Learn to make notches and make a few things like a couple of traps, a billy can holder, try carving a spoon. Learning bushcraft won't happen by buying a BRK&T or a mora or the latest and greatest scandi. Learning bushcraft will be accomplished by doing bushcrafty things. So don't buy a new knife, at least not yet. Play, whittle, carve and figure out what you really like in a handle, blade length and what works for you. Nobody here can tell you that but your own experience.

I agree, although I'd also like to point out that there's a whole lot more to Bushcraft than just being able to use an edged tool :D

Kind regards

thanks for the info. I love the outdoors. I surf the web on my phone so you tube may or may not work for me but I will look into it. I spend at least 10 nights a year camping and have made my own shelter once however I have tons to learn. I tried making a spoon and failed.

I need to get a RC3, I have a RC4 which works pretty well but I agree with kgd about the three.

Scrappy where you from bro? Maybe you can make a get together sometime this year. You will learn a ton of stuff!

You may want to give a mora a try. Tough to do better for the price and affordable enough to get more than one.

I am in utah. where are the meets usually?

Well we have a lot over here in the North East, and the guys in CA have been making a solid effort and have had a few get togethers allready.

Put a thread up asking if anyone is interested in meeting up in your area.

There is a events thread that is a sticky on the first page, check there as well.
