bushcraft skills: the swedish torch/stove - my way

a day out into the woods after some serious rain, presenting the swedish torch - my way: you don't need to cut and split big logs, and you can do it with your sak saw (although i preffer my fiskars). i cheated a bit, using a mini-bushbuddy burner (made from a tea candle) to light the torch.

Great work 555. I've been wanting to try out this very idea myself.

Even with such moist wood, your stove seemed to work great, thanks to the advanced preparation of your firelighters.

Thanks for sharing.

Stay warm and well....maybe even dry! ;)

scruffuk: The video is one I found on the subject and wanted to share.
I find it interesting and something I want to try, because much of the time the firewood here is wet from all of the rain and snow that falls here, with little Sun to dry it out.

Well, how silly of me!! :o

I don't think this lack of sleep is doing me any good.

Anyways, is a good method. I've got ideas to use this multiple, smaller diameter log method.
Even using spoilt wood too maybe. I had the idea about simply staking them in place too, rather than needing to use withies, I believe it would be a little 'safer' in that it eliminates the risk of the withie burning thorough and collapsing the thing.

So, when you do try it, I hope you have good results.

One of my kids really wants to try an upside down fire.

Have you ever tried to build one of these?

I have and it's a solid idea. I've done it several times when camping. Often, by the time we get off work, pack up, leave, unload and 'relax', there isn't much light left. So, I've built several fires like this for the first night. It lasts a good while, but that depend on the size/type of fuel you use. But, every time we have still had plenty hot coals in the morning, and each time I woke up throughout the night, flames were still visible.

And thanks for sharing the vid on the swedish fire variant. I still need to try that one out....

Thanks for posting the video. I am going to give it a try. This will go in my memory right next to the Dakota Fire pit. :)

yes, that's my preferred fire layout now...as the top burns all the coal drops down heating the wood below. i find it to be the least maintenance out of the layouts i've tried.
