Bushman broken - Pic

a link to another forum which has a pic that won't work unless you register....mmmmm

Cant you just save the picture and photo bucket it to this forum?

I don't want to join the mountain man network or whatever that is.

Here is the new pic link, for the Bushman. It's a mighty thin blade for heavy duty chopping. Maybe Cold Steel can make a thicker, heavier one. I wish I bought one of the mini Bushmans.

I have the GI Tanto and True Flight Thrower. HEAVY DUTY! The TFT is thicker, heavier, chops better, and does not have blocky skin tearing hand guards, like the GI Tanto. I plan on reshaping the GI hand guards. Both Knives are definitely keepers. The Thrower could have a little larger buldge for hand guards

Thanks for the link. Duh, you learn something everyday.

This must be bad heat treat. 1055 is a medium carbon steel that should be quite tough and easily hold up to what you were doing. I would definitely request a replacement.

Thanx Cougar,

Wow. I guess that nothing is perfect 100% of the time.

Have you contacted Cold Steel to see what they have to say?

It's a $15 blade. Carry a backup.

Any blade can break. Noss4 eventually breaks every blade he tests, no matter how expensive or massive it is, because he tests to destruction.

What was the owner doing with the blade when it broke? Was it a reasonable expectation for a $15 blade to perform that task?

I've thrown a 6 foot maple-shafted spear with the bushman, regular full-sized, compressed onto the end of the shaft into a maple tree at distance with all my strength: the whole spear would wobble side to side after the blade sank in but no breakage. Love the Bushman for its flexibility.

Now if I inserted the spear into the tree and then used it for a foothold to climb the tree who knows...

What were the circumstances leading up to failure of the blade?

Never mind. I found your earlier post with the details http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=558840, chopping a small stick. You might consider contacting CS customer service for a replacement.

Looks like a new production Bushman with the joined seam handle. The older ones with the open seam have been widely regarded as nearly indestructible. There have been several reports of broken new production versions.

Without knowing more, it's hard to say whether the breakage was the KDOG's fault or whether the knife was defective (it happens). However, I own 2 Bushman- a Mini-Bushman and a full size Bushman that I had another member here custom grind down for me. I have beat on the Bushman (moreso than with most of my other knives-I have that much faith in the design), but never pushed it to the extremes- but like knarfeng said- any blade can eventually be broken.

We do get a couple of lessons from this:
1. Us Knife nuts who carry multiple blades in the field really aren't crazy, were just taking preventative measures- for our own good ;)
2. If you are only going 1 knife into the field, be a lot more conservative in how you use it.
3.If you are in the habit of pushing knives to the edge in the field, by using them for things which they were never meant for, maybe an appropriate dedicated tool is in order.

I am shocked, SHOCKED!! to find that a $15 (hollow-handled!) knife will not withstand infinite abuse!

No info given what brought this break, this is simply a pic (after much work retrieving and posting)of a broken knife. What is the point?

HELLO, anything and everything will BREAK given enough torque, abuse, etc. Again, what is the point? Someone mentioned Noss's destruction tests--this has nothing to do with that; yes he abuses every blade until it breaks, but he documents WHEN AND HOW it breaks, and how much abuse it took before it broke. Did this blade break while prying a steel door open, or cutting butter? We don't know.
