Not being knife knowledgeable, I researched for an indestructible, light weight, dual sport adventure motorcycle, camping knife. I chose the Cold Steel Bushman!

After reading and watching many reviews, this knifes ingenious design has raised valid issues:
Handle has no guard
Handle is round allowing it to rotate in the hand while in use
Handle is round giving no indication of edge orientation in the dark
Handle coating can be slippery

Many have resolved their issues. I used their ideas to create what I wanted. The internet is a WONDERFUL RESOURCE!

A finger guard that runs down the handle provides a bump for anti-rotation and edge orientation.

This guard was made with simple hand tools and formed using a bench vise. The three grooves were cut with a 1/8" round file. The distance between the grooves should be adjusted to your fingers, It was painted black for corrosion resistance.

The 1" wide adhesive backed hockey stick tape was applied with 1/16" spaces matched to the guard's grooves to provide the o-ring seats. 4 wraps of tape at each section and the #15 (1/8" diameter x 3/4" ID x 1" OD) o-rings hold the guard securely. Heating the o-rings in hot water will allow easier installation.

This handle modification addresses the issues found by others and feels good in the hand. You can also choke up with the guard between the index and middle fingers for small tasks.

Best features of this mod:
Hollow handle can be used for storage
Hollow handle can be plugged for water resistance
Hollow handle will accept a lanyard through the factory supplied hole
Hollow handle will accept a handle extension
Fits the factory supplied Secure-Ex sheath
Can be removed leaving the knife completely factory stock

Since the blade material and thickness are close if not the same as the Cold Steel Machete product line...

Bushman Take-Down Motorcycle Machete
1 1/4" ash replacement rake handle from Lowes
Flat green camo paint
1" wide adhesive backed hockey stick tape as used on the knife
#15 o-rings as used on the knife
550 paracord

Now this can be used as a camp knife, baton assisted hatchet, baton assisted splitting wedge, and a take-down machete to fit on the bike.
This knife works great at these tasks, and the finish is holding up really well!

VERY ingenious.....nothing as satisfying as using your noggin....and your time and resources to make something practical and useful. Patent Pending...perhaps ?

I always enjoy seeing mods on this forum. You put some quality thought and effort in to it. Very nice work.

Thanks!

I posted this up as forum member zoltan had asked some questions in his thread. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1161220-Pouch-attachment-to-Secure-Ex-sheath

This blade's unique design just screams rugged dependability. When reviewing what tool to purchase, the comments of owners and their mods were combined into this mod. There may be better materials or ideas that I have not seen. Post them!

Anyway this is a culmination of ideas found on the web. I posted this for anyone and everyone with no plans to patent let alone produce.

Video? Maybe an in use post if it every stops snowing.

I like the extended handle idea, looks like a very useful mod. You put a great deal of thought into all that.

I have owned about 7 bushmen, and they all got this mod, more or less. Never had any issues with it slipping or rotating, but I like your mods all the same. :)
