Bushmaster Firearms International, LLC (BFI) announced today that it has signed an exclusive license deal with Magpul Industries Corp. for the production, future development, and sales of Magpul’s prototype MASADA weapon system.

The Bushmaster ACR (Adaptive Combat Rifle) will initially be offered in 5.56 NATO, available for law enforcement and civilian purchase second quarter 2008. This release will be followed by military ACR versions in the 3rd quarter of 2008.

Without government funding or outside influence of any kind, the Masada concept was developed from scratch in Boulder, Colorado by Magpul’s Design Group. The Masada concept was first shown publicly at the 2007 Shot Show and its success prompted Magpul to spend a year redesigning the system for production.

The result is the ACR (Adaptive Combat Rifle) which keeps the fundamentals of the Masada concept with added advanced features such as firing pin block and true ambidextrous charging handle.

Among the ACR’s key features are a gas piston operating system, tool-less quick change barrel, multi-adjustable folding stock with integrated storage, and backward compatibility with a number of AR15/M16 parts. Due to similar operating controls, user transition from the M16 series of weapons is easily facilitated with minimal re-training.

The Bushmaster ACR will initially be available in 3 SKUS: Standard Carbine with fixed stock, Entry Carbine with folding stock, and Special Purpose Rifle with Precision Rifle Stock. Live fire demonstration and test and evaluations beginning in the end of March to qualified law enforcement, federal government agencies.

This was the rifle I was waiting on this year. Now I'm wondering whether to buy because of Bushmaster's less-than-stellar QC.

Anyone else have strong feelings?

Cool looking rifle. But why name it after a glorious suicide?
As for the QC, as long as they stand by their weapons and allow exchange till you get a good one.

The renders look a little different from the original working concept at the SHOT show, but I am still very interested. I personally own a Rock River, but I shoot with many people that have BMs and they work. Mostly competitive stuff like 3-gun and IPSC or USPSA, which can be pretty hard on any weapon. Let's just say that my opinion of some of the big name manufacturers has gone down considerably since seeing numerous problems with them in competition.

I believe that Magpul has done an outstanding job of addressing most, if not all, of the issues that many have with the current AR platform. The FN SCAR looked good, but the Masada/ACR looks even better. Fully ambidextrous, quick change barrel, parts interchangeability/modularity. It has it all. I will be purchasing one when they are available. I was about to pull the trigger on another AR with a gas piston kit last year until I saw this thing.

I'm actually thinking about putting a gas piston upper or two on my AR's as well. LMT & Colt are both putting out offerings... but damn this looks nice!

This thing is supposed to be able to "transform" into firing the 7.62x39 & the new 5.7mm round too or something isn't it? I read an excellent review & really like the concept

When I see it in the hands of an American serviceman then I'll believe the hype...not that this is neccesarily the best standard considering what most of them wear into battle these days.

When you see what IS in the hands of soldiers, it shouldn't make you feel any better.

Would buy one in a heart beat . I own several bushys never had a problem . :)

I saw this thing on Futurwepons the other night; I was surprised when they said who made it, because I thought it was the H&K XM-8. Is there any relationship between these 2 guns, or do they just both look cartoony enough to seem similar?

And if it's not the XM-8, what happened to it anyway?

I'm curious to see what the DoD eventually settles on to replace the M4/M16 whenever that decision takes place.

There seem to be more and more candidates coming out of the woodworks lately.

At one time there was talk about fielding a combo rifle/20mm grenade launcher but I haven't heard anything about that recently. Perhaps the electronics necessary for setting the fuse for the airbursting grenade wasn't reliable enough?

Ok after sifting through Shot Show forums and pictures I found out that Remington bought out DPMS and Bushmaster? Not sure if that will have any effect on the weapon's production, but it may eventually. For the better or the worse.

Remington didn't buy out Bushy and DPMS, Cerberus did. Cerberus is a capital investment firm that has been swooping around buying up all sorts of stuff - by buying Big Green, DPMS and Bushy, they are vertically integrated supply-wise and that makes for more money and a bigger chance when competing for a military contract.

With regards to this though, who knows. After handling one at SHOT, I likey! Too bad about the fixed stock standard though.

i have owned bushmasters that performed flawlessly

early pictures from magpul showed a brass deflector...some of the shot show pictures did not appear to have one

as a lefty...this is an important feature

anyone know if the production acr will have one?

I've had a bushy for awhile and put around 1000 rounds through it without cleaning and it hasn't missed a beat. and of course 90% of the rounds were wolf or some other poo round. i'd buy bushy again in a heartbeat, i wouldn't however buy their gas piston version, buddy of mine had one and it was not too shiny. if you want a gas piston rifle either buy the HK version or go ahead and buy something that was designed that way from the start such as an FNFAL. I've been very impressed with the AR15 platform so far and probably will hang on to mine. just my .02.

XM-8 wasn't a great enough leap so it was scrapped. Right now the FN SCAR is on the table. ACR is just being made for fun I suppose as I don't think it's being tested. Delta uses the HK 416 which is IMHO the best, easiest, and cheapest solution. LWRC IAR is AMAZING IMHO, open bolt on full auto, closed on semi, short stroke gas piston, all in a simple AR series package...what more can a guy want?

An AK. Works every time.

I wanted to try one until I found out BM was involved. I've seen too many examples of their QC to spend any money with them right now. Most people (myself included, at one point) don't know about the little details that actually make for a quality AR-type rifle and most of the problems don't surface within the lifetime or stress levels put on them by the average shooter. I wouldn't shoot anything with less of the important features than the M&P15 and my next project will be a scratch-build with all Noveske and LMT parts. By the time I get tired of that one, maybe the Masda/ACR will have proven itself, one way or the other. I do hope it turns out to be a quality-built rifle because I think the concept is sound and it has some really nice, innovative features that can be put to good use shooting smelly bearded men in the face. :D
