Business attire, part 2

About a month ago, I posted a thread asking for some advice on how to best reconcile knife carry and business attire. Since folks were kind of enough to offer their thoughts, I thought it only appropriate to let others know what I’ve learned.

When all was said and done, the best solution for me was simply to move my knife from the right front pocket to the right hip pocket (I don’t carry a wallet in my hip pocket). Keeping the pocket buttoned works best.

If I feel the need to be discreet, I carry my CF Dragonfly; the only thing that shows is the clip and a little bit of the scales; there’s nothing that suggests "knife" to anyone but a knife person.

On the days I care about being discreet, the clip placement on the Almite Walker allows about an inch of knife (pivot end) to show; however, it’s mostly covered by my arm, and certainly not visible to someone standing in front of me. So far, no problems -- perhaps the sheeple don’t even recognize what it is.

I've been carrying a Spyderco Veile in my back pocket for more than a year at my day job. No one has ever mentioned the clip or asked what it was. When I wear a blazer, you can't even see the clip. Mind you the one time when I took it out to cut some really thick plastic it was refered to as a "machette". Machette?!?! Guess it was a good thing I didn't show them the Commander in my jacket pocket

There are only two types of people; those who understand this, and those who think they do.

I wear a suit nearly everyday on and off the job. So far I have had no trouble carrying either my Calypso or my Halo 2.

I almost think the trick is that if you wear a necktie the knife becomes invisable. People see the clip and assume that it is something else.

I think MNH may have hit upon it. Monday through Thursday of last week, I was wearing a tie. No comments about the Almite Walker peeking out of my back pocket. Friday, I was doing the business casual thing (khaki's and a cotton sport shirt) and someone asked if that was a "throatslitter" in my back pocket.

All good points and all, but I think it would be so much better if the companies offered different color/hue clips with their knives.

My Spydies have either black or satin finish stainless clips, while my BM's have only black...My Microtech has the "gray/grey" clip, while CS's are all black plastic (bummer).

I feel that one should match clip color to pants color...attempting as best as possible to not draw attention to anything.

One thing I do; I carry a pager everyday for work and play, and lately at work I hae needed to carry a radio/phone as well. Cliping my Stryker on my hip, rightside, directly behind the mid-hip belt loop, and right between phone and pager makes it nearly impossibe to see the knife, and a 910 Stryker is a big folder; doing this with my Pardue 330 or 350 is much easier and even harder to see.

Try this:
1) Insert knife in right pocket (if folding knife; extra points if you can fit a Busse Basic 9 in there!), with clip attached to pants. A long cord attached to belt/beltloop is optional, but recommended. Tuck length of cord into pocket.
2) Put on jacket, as this will cover any and all folding knives. It also looks much better. I NEVER wear a tie without a jacket. The jacket CAN be removed, so I always wear it. If in a rush, I just leave my shirt untucked, and bring my jacket. When bringing one to school use some sort of a bag or cover.
3) If anyone says anything about knife (which they will not do if you keep jacket on), you have two options
3a) Answer questions politely, showing them the knife if they ask..
3b) Kill them and blame it on your superior. Perhaps you will get their job.

Keep in mind that I do not have a job, and that the only large folder I've ever carried when dressing to impress is my XL Voyager. I can absolutely guarantee beyond a shadow of a doubt that if for some odd reason we needed to stick a knife through a car, I would have always been the most prepared to do so. You could also just carry a small folder like the Victorinox Electrician.

Hello!

Just wanted to share my "experience" or what ever...:-)

I VERY seldom wear a suit, but once i used my Spyderco Police with aluminium scales(Tuffram coated)as a tie-clip, no-one noticed, i did get a comment about my clean looking tie-clip though!

Maybe not something for everyday carry but it suited(??)me just fine that time and draw was very quick.

Take care and be well!/Jonas aka 2Sharp
