I just completed the Busse 5160 blade blanks that were offered for sale a few months ago on exchange forum knifemakers supplies. There were 700 blanks for sale and Justin Gingrich, Ranger knives purchased them and sold some individually. I got a 7 1/2" and a 6 1/2" blade to finish. These were flat stock 5160 carbon steel that were profiled in I think the shape of the Battle Mistress. I put a full convex grind on both. I finished the 7 1/2" but haven't completed the other. It has green canvas micarta scales, expoxied and secured with loveless screws. I also made a leather sheath for it. I would like to thank Jerry Busse for making these available to purchase and thank Justin Gingrich also for selling some individually. Justin is responsible for doing the heat treat. It's hardened to 58 RC. TKS did the cryo treat. I would like to thank everyone who helped me with this enjoyable project. This knife is not for sale because I wouldn't feel right about profiting off a design that was not mine. You can check out a pic on my website www.knifeshows.com/gossman It's the first (top) photo.
(sorry about the pic, it's not that good)

I'll have it on display at all the Maryland gunshows I attend and also at the Cheasapeake Knife Show in December.

Maybe it's beacause I have dial up service but I can't see any pictures.
If your computer is as slow as mine it takes some time for the pictures to download. They will eventually come up, it's a little slow sorry.

Could you tell me how 5160 steel differs from INFI? And if possible, where could I find Busse blades for sale? I thought to buy before blades only, but did not manage to find any information.
Regards,

Regards,
5160 is a straight carbon steel used mostly as a forging steel by the hammer and anvil makers. There are some makers who do stock removal also with this steel. This is the first time I've used it and love it. It's very easy to grind. I use D2 as my main steel for my knives. I'm going to start using it for my larger "survival" knives. I'm not familiar with INFI. That would be a question for the Busse knife forum. These were blades that Busse Knife Co. had for their apprentice knifemaker program and since thery're making their knives on CNC machinery and using INFI steel, they no longer needed them. Jerry offered them for sale in a lot of 700 blades. I got lucky and was one of the first to be able to buy two. The ones that were sold individually went fast. They are no longer available.

Good looking blade. Glad that you had fun finishing it. I have seen a few that people have done and they are all looking really good. I even saw one of the 7.5 inch blades get turned into a tanto blade. Once again great job on the knife.

Thank you for the complement Justin. I appreciate your help with the heat treat. ;)

To view the pic a little faster click the first (top) box It comes up quicker then waiting for all the pics to download. Thanks for looking

Justin Gingrich did an outstanding job heat treating this knife. I did some minimal cutting tests just to see how edge strength and retention was, and I was very impressed. I cut eight water filled soda cans, a couple of empty plastic bottles and a treated lumber 2x4 in half. In that order. The 2x4 took no time at all. The blade bit deep with each hit. Man I love a convex grind :D Checking the edge, no chips or dings. It still shaved hair, just wasn't as keen as before I started. Six times on each side stropping on my leather belt brought it back to popping hair sharpness. I think the added cryo treat also helped alot. Thanks again Justin, I'll be calling on you for more heat treating of 5160 blades ;)

Sounds like you have been having a little fun with your new blade. I am glad that I could help. If you get a chance and you have them I would love to see pictures of some of the testing that you did. :D

Once again it is a great looking blade. You did a really nice job with it. I am looking forward to seeing what else you come up with.

Thanks Justin, that pic on the website sucks. I've got a digital camera now I think I'll take another shot of the knife and post it. If anyone could host it I could email it to them. But then again I don't want to impose. I'll just post it on knifeshows site. I'll take a couple of pics and try to get them on today.

I posted a new pic of the knife and a pic of the cutting test items also. It's the first two pics on the knifeshows site (the link above) Sorry for the slow download of pics, i have no control over that. Thanks for looking :)

I apologize for any of you that are having a problem viewing the site. I'm working on getting my own site and I hope to be able to post pics better in the future. The pics do eventually download themselves. I don't know why it takes so long. :(

P.S. It took my computer about 3 min. to download the first two pics and 6 min. for the rest.
