Busse as compared to Fehrman question

Okay folks, I know one of you "Hogs" must have a Fehrman as well. I don't own either right now, but will be purchasing a BM when they hit the company store. All that being said, the Fehrman blades look pretty good, and what I have heard and read seems to mirror what folks here say about the Busse blades. I am wondering if anybody here has one each of the two brands in similiar sized knives, and can tell me how they compare with each other. I know you guys are biased, but you seem to be a great bunch of people who I think would give me the straight scoop......I am pretty sure that either would more than stand up to anything I could dish out, and I will probably end up owning both down the road, but would like to hear other's opinions on the subject. Thanks in advance.

If you haven't already done so, check out Cliff Stamps website. He seperately tests at least one Fehrman and a couple of Busses. As I recall, there is not much of a comparison. One guess as to which one came out ahead.

Well I own 3 Busses, 4 Fehrmans, and 2 Trident Custom knives.
As far as I am concerned, all 3 brands are at the top of the heap for quality, strength, usability.
Busse knives may be able to cut up your car, but I really don't intend to be cutting up any cars.
On one of the Hoodlums pages there are photos of Fehrman being put to the test. (i will try and get the link and put it here.)

Trident Custom Knives has a series of tests that they have put their knives through and you should be able to access them via their web page. http://www.tridentknives.com/TESTING.htm

Busse Knives has come a long way in the past 6 years as far a their designs are concerned and also their custome service is now top notch also.

Fehrman Tool and Die knives have a great bunch of people working for them too.

The knife maker at Trident Custom Knives (can't spell his name) will do his best to give you what you want in a tough and very ergonomic package.

I like them all just about the same as my leverl of abuse is well below the stated abuse of the Bussephiles of which I am not necessarily one...I am just a Busse owner.

FWIW
Ciao

muzzleup brings up a great point. a knife does not have to be able to cut a car in half to be excellent quality. sometimes the only time you can tell the difference in the quality of knives is through rigorous tests. but for day to day use you may never see the difference. ex... Swamp Rat -vs- Busse. Both excellent, top quality knives and you probably wouldn't see the difference between the two outside of strict testing conditions. For the most part. (Of course they can both cut up cars :D )

Just my $.02

don't own either but have been doing a lot of reading. for the average user the reason why I am going for Busse is corrosion resistance. Neither are truly stainless but from what I hhave read Infi is much more stain resistant than CPM 3V. The thought of all that lovely steel covered in rust fills me with horror. that said Stamp's article didn't cover the Fehrman in glory and a big blade like that is going to be used hard.

To be fair to Fehrman, Cliff's review was of a large knife designed more for cutting than chopping ie it had a much thinner edge than an equivelant Busse. I would really like to see Cliff do a review of their Final Judgement survival knife which is ground to be a chopper ie thicker edge than the blade tested by Cliff. I am pretty sure I am going to end up with a few of each....I have been waiting for the BM from the company store, but have almost talked myself into a hell razor so I don't have to wait lol. I also really like the Badger Attack but who knows when I will have a chance to snag one of those. I am thinking my first Fehrman knife will be their "last chance" model 5.5" x 1/4" heavy grind blade that looks alot like a BA. The longer I use and collect knives, the more expensive they get it seems like. I have a pile of knives that have been used very heavily, and very few have let me down. There is a lot of great cutlery out there these days, but my tastes are starting to cause my credit card (not to mention my wife) a lot of greif. Thanks for all the comments and information folks...I really appreciate it.

The tridents look cool, so do the ferhmans but I cannot attest to how good they are. Most people that own them seem happy with them and I do not know what they do to them either. I do know what I do to Busses daily, I do know what Cliff has done to busses daily and I have seen what others have done to busses as well. That's good enough for me:thumbup: .

THis really belongs in the Review/Testing forum.

I own many Busses and I own few Fehrmans. I feel you get a better knife for your money with Busse. It's not just the steel but innovative designs and so many models available with tons of options you're bound to find something you will like. Fehrman have only few models and that's it.

though cliff may not have done a head to head of the two, his straight handled battle mistress has been thinned out considerably. if i recall correctly, that as well as the basic 7 were thinned waaay down from what they were originally, making them much closer to cutting blades then what i would call a dedicated chopping blade.

It did, however I have used other knives with similar profiles for such work without any rolling/chipping. I regrind my personal carry knives much finer.

I have both, and prefer the Fehrman Peacemaker in smaller FB's and Busse Steelheart E for larger. The 3V in my PM holds an edge longer when cutting wood, cardboard, etc. and the INFI in my SH has resisted edge impaction better. I haven't quantified any numbers yet, but so far the 3V has been on par in edge holding with my Queen 4180 hunter in D2. I like the ergonomics on the PM better when compared to a BA3 or Active Duty. I like the ergonomics of the SH better for chopping, the finger grooves on my Fehrman get in the way. I am trying to get some woods time with my larger Fehrman to put it to the test and see if I can duplicate the damage (or not) that Cliff saw.

I like both, for different reasons. I should note that although they both have an advantage in different areas, the other isn't necessarily bad.

It would be of interest. I still like the steel on paper, but not in practice. I would be interested in the low temperature temper responce.

Thanks for all the information and opinions guys. It really doesn't look like I could go wrong with either. I think I better have a few of each :). Can't wait til the BM comes to the company store, and, in the meantime, I think I am going to get a Peacemaker and a last chance from Fehrman. I will post reviews of each when I get them.
