Hi all!

I am planning on buying an ASH-1 with a black coating on the blade (hopefully it works out) and my question is how well does this hold up with use?

I hear Busse knives are the toughest around, and I plan on using this knife to it's fullest potential.

Let me have some opinions please

Thanks

the coating will wear off, if you use the blade for general use/chopping it will last longer, if you baton with it the coating will go. Some feel this makes the blade looked loved, others don't.... personally tear it up, the coating will go but the knife will be around for ever......

From what I gather, smooth coatings (like gray or sage) hold up a bit longer and are easier to clean than crinkle coatings (like the muddy).

I had a minty skinny ash with a muddy crinkly coating and after using it over the course of one day, stretching her legs by doing some heavy chopping and batoning, I managed to chip some of the coating off... Now shes nice and purdy - it just adds to the character of the blade :D

I might be wrong but I think the black is a crinkle coat - I'm sure some other more experienced guys will confirm.

I do heavy cutting and batoning. To avoid wear If I go with a "plain" finish as opposed to the crinkle coat do you think that will stop wear from showing on the blade as much?

The coating is there to protect the blade from wear and tear. However, its not magic. The INFI steel underneath it is thou!!! I took my knife out and chopped with it and I had some coating wear, which I expected. After finishing the blade had not a single dent in it. So no matter what you do its gonna smooth or chip, but who cares you can always get it re-coated. Its what's on the inside that counts!!:D

If you dont want coating wear or tear, get an LE with a Satin Finish (ie no coating)

throwing and battonning will chip the coating a bit. The quickest spot to go will be the coating on the tip of the spine. I have thrown mine, and chopped and battoned and dropped it.

The great thing about infi, is that really, the coating is just for looks. It really does not need to be there. It is not like other non stainless steels, in that it won't really have a problem with rust, even when the coating is gone.

When the coating gets too beat up, you can either just love it all rugged tough looking, or send it back in for a re-coat at Busse, or you can strip the remaining coating off and keep right on using it.

Hahaha I guess it doesn't matter if I can get it re coated.

Not that I plan on it but, what would the possibility of the blade breaking if I through the knife against a wood surface and it bounces off. Because I've broke a few knives like that.

never never never happen.

You could bounce the Ash against concrete as hard as you can swing all day long, and it won't break. The edge will roll and dent, but you obviously need to watch Noss's destruction testing on the Ash and the FBMLE

Hours of beating on concrete, in a vice smashing it sideways with sledge hammer, and cutting though steel by bashing the spine of the knife with a sledge hammer

And that's the SKINNY ASH!:D

That old Hog Cobalt has thrown his SHBM into wood THOUSANDS of times.

Since I have that knife now, it gets an occasional toss to keep it happy.

I was under the impression that throwing knives was good for knives only intended for that purpose. I had a bad experience with a couple of some other companie's military style Bowies getting tips broken.

So you're saying I could throw my Ash1 at a tree a few times NO-Prob? I may considder that one day.

If you break a Busse doing something as wimpy as throwing it at a log, it'll almost certainly get replaced. If I had any skill at it whatsoever, I wouldn't hesitate to throw every single Bussekin blade I own.

...just out of principle. So would I.:D

Fear not, coated or not, you're not going to break this knife. The coating is meant to first "smooth out" from wear, and then chip. Its just a little added longevity, even though you wont damage the blade anyway. If you're dead set on coated, pick based on looks, because they're all going to wear off anyway.

I have thrown my Ash1 quite a few times. No problems at all. you will loose a bit of the tip coating quicker than otherwise, but no problems. I have seen one person get the tube fasteners bend out of wack from throwing (if I remember correctly) but I have not had that problem. Throw away, my friend, throw away!!!!! I have even thrown my FBMLE a time or two.

Handle hold throw

Blade hold throw (the knife is literally hair popping sharp, so you gotta be careful using this method)

There was one hell razor or SFNO that had the micarta scales shatter when it hit the log the wrong way. If you know how strong micarta is that should impress how violent a really hard throw can be on a knife. Infi will hold up just fine, and in the completely unlikely event that something does happen, it's totally covered under warranty.

I'm saying you could throw it a few THOUSAND times. But, as has been noted, the tube rivets may loosen from shearing forces. Busse will be happy to fix that.
