Is he Busse presence at the Chicago knife show an annual event?
If so, I'll probably be making a road trip, since (I think) It's around an 8 hour drive from here. And I've been putting off this Hog thing for too long now! :D

No wonder you already became a Hog! Heck if I lived that close I would have been there 6 times over.

Yeah I know badmojo very well and the thread you posted is also familiar. Just don't get what it has to do with the "Hog thing". If you show up you just get inducted? Kind of diminishes the honor if the "title" is just handed out.

What makes one eligible then? I have read that it isn't the number of knives that makes a Hog. To me it seems that being a Hog is more about sharing knowledge, keeping the peace on the forums without stirring things for one's own greater glory, giving the new guy the shirt of off your back. That sort of thing. Heck, I bet there are guys who give knives away to those who don't have them or other charitable stuff we never hear about who deserve the "title" more than many of those listed in the role call thread you posted. Hows about the guy who bought the SH variant from one guy so the Marine who was its original owner could have it back? I bet he isn't in the "honor" roll. I am not looking to pick a fight, just curious if the guys who are listed as "Hogs" look at it as a goal to be obtained or look at it more like a mantle to be upheld. As silly as it is, if the guys and gals who are "hogs" are all charitable folks who would give you the shirt off of their backs, that would be worth wanting to be a part of. But if it is just some middle aged status deal for guys and gals who buy knives and are trying to garner favor with the owner of the company, then where's the honor in that? Where's the purpose? I have been on these forums as a lurker for a long time, so don't take me for a guy who doesn't know what he is talking about, I think my points are good ones to ponder. If I were a Hog and it was a collection of fine folks who were united around a common interest while maintaining a code of conduct and ethic, then I would think that I wouldn't want just anyone to be allowed the honor, regardless of the number of knives he or she had. That would definitely cheapen it for me and reduce my enthusiasm. Get what I am saying? I hope so because it is late and I might not make sense.

Any inducted Hogs want to chime in?

I think that being a Hog is a Tao-like thing. You don't think about it. You just do it!
BTW.... last year Jerry sent me a email asking me if I'm going to Blade.
Presence on this forum is a big first step in becoming a hog.
By the way... Are you a 3rd shift worker like myself? (Is that why you're still up?)

Like I said, I have been here a long time lurking and learning, don't let the join date fool you. I may not have the forum presence to be a "Hog", but like I said, if it is just a status deal like a bunch of A holes sitting around polishing their sports cars and trying to one up each other then I could care less (no offense to A holes or sports car owners intended :)). I would like to have some inducted hogs chime in here and give me their take, seeing as you are an aspiring "Hog" we can't count you as a "Hog" yet right? I know that they are probably all in bed, so I don't expect to get a response tonight, but I am curious to see what they think. I will check back as my schedule allows. Seems to me that even though Busse Combat is Jerry's baby and the Hogs are an offshoot of his creation, the inducted members might want a little vote on who is in and who is out. That arguement wouldn't hold much water if it is just a title of status and little else though. That is more what I am trying to discern for myself. I would actually like to know what Jerry thinks as well. Has the "Hog" thing grown to the point of a serious collector organization with some loose code of conduct and ethics to where he might consider letting current "Hogs" voice their opinions on who is ready to be a "Hog" with him having the final say (since it is his company)?

On a side note, it is sort of nice getting personal emails and phone calls from the boss isn't it. I always look forward to chatting with him.

You guys are taking this waaaay too seriously. :D

I was inducted at the last Chicago show, and had no idea it was coming. I have been dealing with Busse since the early 1990`s. I don`t think anyone considers it a "status thing", but more of a fun thing. I know it brought a lot of stares from onlookers when Jerry was waving that sword around during the induction. Just some guys having fun, don`t take it too seriously.

It's a fun thing man. To me its all about comraderie and sharing a common interest in some cool knives. I have to admit that if the other Hogs were "A holes" as you put it, I probably wouldn't want to associate with them :D. But it has been my experience that is not the case. I got a good deal early on in my collection from Stomper, so he's been cool in my book since the get go. :D We Illinois Hogs have to stick together. (I bet the folks at the Chicago show won't forget the impromptu induction.)

Do I think it enriches the experience that all the Hogs I know are stand up people who would give you the shirt off of their backs if you needed help? Oh yeah!

I know for a fact that not every guy who owns a Busse is inducted at the drop of a hat. Last year at Blade we had some established Rats (meaning their presence on the Rat forum was well known and they had solid reps over there but they didn't have the time over here just yet) at our induction and it was decided that it might not be appropriate (in deference to current Hogs) to induct them just yet. I am betting those guys have put more time in here and will be inducted this year if they show up.

So there is an element of earning your place at the Round Trough, not through merely owning a Busse or twenty :) It just goes to illustrate that Jerry does have some level of friendly and helpful forum activity in mind for those whom he inducts. Let's face it, Jerry probably didn't envision a bunch of grown people sitting in a restaurant snorting at one another while he waves a blade about another guys head when he started Busse Combat, but we have by default become associated to some degree with Busse's public image (that thought alone should scare the hell out of Jerry :D). That is one reason I personally feel it should be more about good people who are actively sharing their interests and helping the new guys along. It serves no one's interest to argue or go about speading hate and discontent on this or any other forum. If you have been around the forums long enough you know how some people look at Busse fans, you can almost hear it in the way they reply (mostly on some other forums I have visited briefly, no finger pointing mind you).

Did I go on long enough? Good, I'll do anything to avoid changing diapers while my boy seems to have a stomach bug. :D

Keep it fun and helpful brothers and sisters.

While I'm not a HOG, yet, all the ones I've dealt with have been great people. They answered all the typical dumb newbie questions I could think of. Even had some give me what I thought was exceptional deals on knives to get me started. Sort of like dope dealers giving a little taste to get you addicted. Darn Infi pimps!!!

Good post.

I'm fairly new to the idea of Hog-ness, but just from what I've gathered on this forum, it always seemed more about the common interest and comraderie and not about any sort of status or oneupsmanship. The Hogs to whom I've directed questions of late (Porkgunner among them) have been very helpful and have gone out of their way to help me with info about Busse knives.

To be honest, I don't aspire to any kind of collector status. I use all my knives, and if I don't, they get sold or traded. However, I have acquired a few Busse knives (5) in the past few months, and I have my sights on a couple more upcoming blades. Still, I can contribute here in terms of reviews, some basic knowledge about Busse knives, lots of experience with Scotch, lots of well-intentioned razzing, and a love of all things outdoors. Hog or not, this is a good site with some decent folk.

Being a HOG isn't as much a state of ownership as it is a state of mind!

I have never had any problem figuring out who the HOGs were amongst us, whether inducted or not, you can just tell. And there are far more HOGs out there who have yet to be inducted, than there are those who have gone through the top secret initiation. I mean think about it! Do you know how dedicated you have to be to participate in a ceremony that involves dancing out of a very large cake while wearing a Hog-themed pink G-String??!!!. . . Pretty darned dedicated. . . . That's how we sift through the posers!!! :D Shhh. . . tell no one!!!

We are very fortunate to have the greatest customers on the planet. . . bar none!!! I have never encountered such a great group of guys and gals at any other stage or in any other area of my life.

The HOGs have really put the fun back into knife collecting and using/abusing for so many folks, including me. . . HOGdom really is just about having a good time. . . . . . The dinners. . the big cake. . the knives and dog tags that get hidden along the highways and byways of this great country, and the stuff that HOGs will go through to find one of these knives or tags. . . .the race for the fastest mouse during a special offer. . .the willingness to help out the new guys. . . the funny posts and heart touching threads that are commonplace on the Busse forums. . . And of course, the unrelenting pursuit of INFI that allows for acts of greed and deception to be revered and admired with the HOG Battle Cry of "NO REGRETS"!!! . . . Add to this how I continue to be humbled by the unbelievable generosity and patriotism of our customers. . .and you now have a small glimpse of HOGdom! The list can go on forever. . . INFInitely in fact, but you get the idea. . . .

Nuke on my wayward HOGs!!!

I salute you with the top secret cloven hoof salute!!!!!

Jerry.
