The 5 is my personal favorite of the Basics. It's a good size for most basic camp activities, but strong enough to pound through wood without worrying about whether it can take it. It's also a little less intimidating to sheeple since it looks, well, Basic, and doesn't have a huge, sheeple-scaring blade. I'll carry something bigger if I'm out alone or with a group of more understanding individuals, but I'll also have the 5 in my pack and will usually carry it around camp.

I've got one enroute. If it's half the hype..
than I know there's a place for it in my kit.

s002cjs- What works best field sharpening the Busse edge? Needs to work on my BM-E, also.?
thanks, Jason

Strop the left side on a ceramic rod (I use a rod from the Spyderco Sharpmaker), and strop the right side-which is convex-on a canvas or leather strop (or belt in the field).

With my hands being large I find the handle or grip to be small, I really think I'm going with a Basic 7, they tell the handle is larger,Its an great knife but it just don't fit!

I had a 5, and i traded it.
I think I'll get another one sometime, but right now im still drooling over my sog bowie.

Got a Basic 5 in trade on the forums and its my 2nd favorite Busse. I like it so much that I am now selling my Badger Attack E!It seems to be the perfect all around size for camp, hunting, and survival use.It has found a permanent home in my go bag behind the seat of my truck.

Jason-

Exactly what OwenM said, although I don't usually NEED to strop it in the field, but it does help the edge a bit. It's a question of how 'hair popping' sharp you need.

By the way, is this the Jason who was at H2K last year? If so, you saw one of my Basic 5's there...

yep, same Jason. Still don't have my 5 yet...
I'd like a Normark sheath with my 1/2" sparking rod and mini ceramic stick onboard.
Anyone got useful input; without turning the sheath an overloaded joke? TIA, Jason
