Hey Busse nuts I'm a part time maker looking at making a sword length blade. Now before they switched to INFI,and if I could get some I'd use that,I've seen the pics on the Busse site of the testing WOW what a blade. But I'm pretty sure the old Busse kensei was made from A2 has anyone out there heard of a failure, chipping or bending however extreme the use from an old Busse kensei or even a knife as I think A2 was a standard for the whole line for a while. And they must have switched for a reason.I'm not looking to find fault with Busse. It's just from what I've seen they only use the absolute best and they test thier blades harder than any production company I know. It's just feed back from other makers suggets A2 can lean a little toward the stiff and brittle in a long thin blade.

Blasphemy!!!

:D ;)

I really don't know but I'm sure one of the educated Hogs will be along to answer your question.

Forgive me father for I HAVE sinned. But like I said I cant have any INFI.I just want to know how far A2 can be pushed

A2 is pretty tough. I have a few knives of it and I'm not sure if the busse HT on A2 is a lot better than what I have, but it's definitely better than any stainless steel out there in the toughness category. I haven't fractured any A2 blades and I'm sure you'd have to put them through some hellish punishment before deep fractures would form. I have had a few chips before upon striking metal, but nothing more than 1/16" or so and easily sharpened out.

busse helps/helped develope the heat treating process for the swamp rat and scrap yard line (i assume the scrap yard line)

the same facilities and equipment are used for busse and swamp rat.

swamp rat uses 52100, and scrap yard uses s7. 2 more steels to consider

A2 was probably the best that was available back then before infi and that is what he used. When he found something better he went to it, just seems like a logical progression. However, since all his knives/swords are lifetime guranteed I would say that his HT process far surpasses 99% of the other guys and that may be the reason for the unusual toughness of his A2 and ATS34.

are you actually looking for feedback because you are looking to use A2 on your swords? wondering why you ask? Doubtful you can reproduce busses HT so it may be best to stick with 1060-1084 or S5 and S7 for swords.

Thanks for the feedback guys.Have looked at S7,the 10 series, plus 5160 and L6,but was leaning toward A2 because I dont have a forge and would have to send long blades to a pro heat treating mob,and the other steels respond better to differential heat treat in my experience with knife length projects.Plus a few other makers like Hartsfield and Criswell get good reviews on thier A2 swords but Busse is the only one I've seen with such exterme testing.A Busse special heat treat huh? Hmm maybe multiple quench and sub-zero treatments or even martempering, something to ask the bladesmiths forum about maybe. Thanks again

yes, if you can find someone who is known for an exceptional HT process in the sword world, I would go with whatever steel they suggest. L6 is another great one. But again A2 if done right is good stuff.

For real abuse in a sword I have always liked The Criswell swords.

We shall see how the Busse Swords perform, I have a couple to beat now.

What I have is a thirty inch bladed Criswell in A-2

For a fair comparison I would need to get a Crisswell Waki of some sort.

I have not thrown the Busse Sword yet!!and that's what I got them for.

Throw a thirty inch bladed Criswell, Cool idea, Thank you.

Another excuse to find and buy a Criswell Waki, Cool idea, thank you.

My first Busse sword from years ago was a one of a kind and cost enough that I was afraid to do any more than just work out kata's with it.

These new ones I can better afford to get out and get "Stupid" with.

Got to love getting Stupid with Busse knives, they used to be all go and no show, but now seem to be getting Showy, pretty, and cute as well as being real durable, we shall see.
