Busse camping knife suggestion?

All,

I'm close to getting my second Busse and am thinking it might be one of the HHFSH's. It looks like a sturdy knife that will be good for camping, but could be a little heavy backpacking. It will be teamed up with another knife, probably my active duty. My friend has a bushwacker but I haven't had a chance to use it yet, do you think I'll be happy with one of these or should I be considering something else?

EDIT: Sorry thought he was thinking, as did SurvivetheCollapse, thanks for letting me know!

I really like the feel if my sarsquatch, if you are worried about weight consider the DSF or the larger B11. I dont have a BWM so I cant say anything about it.

I love my HHFSH. I consider it to be a great chopper for its size. Make sure you get a .270 saber-ground HHFSH, and not the flat-ground FSH.

SH-E, Tank Buster, BWM-LE (or BWM), any NO or SH. I'd probably go with a Hell (or Mud) Razor...

FBM (along with your AD) if weight wasn't an issue.

I have also read a lot of good things regarding the B11, although I've never owned any Basic model. :o

Welcome to the forums! FWIW, I would edit out the jerk smiley ASAP.

What's the Jerkit for ? Seems like your question is a sensible one though .... so ....

- The best chopper Busse does for the weight you have to carry is the Basic 11 .... but it is a long knife .... so if you want to wear the camp knife on a belt and find a long knife awkward then a HHFSH is shorter but heavier over all ... the total length is the same as a Busse Basic 9 which are really hard to come by on the exchange .... but again are very light .... about 14 oz's and they chop just slightly less effective than the much heavier HHFSH .... mainly because the weight of the knife is in the blade and it has a good forward heavy blade feel .... just what you need for chopping.

Getting a Basic 9 is unlikely .... but Basic 11's are now on the exchange .... I assume HHFSH's are too .... if weight on the belt is'nt an issue then your original choice of a HHFSH is hard to beat .... probably the best full tang chopper in the 8 inch blade range ....

Personally I would jump on a Basic 11 as they chop better and weigh less ... significantly so in terms of saving weight .... 16-17oz's for a Basic 11 and around 26 oz's for a HHFSH.

Love this thread cause I'm in a similar boat. I've got the BWM and am debating between a thicker BWM, HHFSH/HOGFSH or an FBM of sorts.

Not meaning to hijack, but if wearing on a dangler do the HHFSH's or FBM's get to be too heavy when worn?

Love my Basic 11 or use my SAR8 for deep woods camping,,have used the SAR 5 from time to time also for the family camping scene.

If you're worried about weight then you probably don't want a HHFSH. BWM might be good, or a SAR8. I personally like the SAR knives a lot.

I just read over and over the "chopper" posts, and the B11 surfaces always, as one of the best chopper to it's weight.
I have the BWM CG and the BWM LE, and the CG is a really nice do it all blade, what I could use for anything, and still relatively light.
The BWM LE - IMHO-and for me - is the most beautiful in the user category.
The blade form, the overall appearance and proportions are just perfect. it is still relatively nimble and light, while it's heavier and more effective in the chopping department than the CG.
So - the B11 could be a better chopper, but I consider the BWM LE as a more versatile and nicer :) blade...
If I would have to choose a pair it would be the BWM LE and a CABS.

As a "one blade" I would go probably for a SAR6.

others really like their NMSFNO's as a "camp knife". There are quite many blades in the BC lineup what would fit in that role perfectly. we are different, as our knife preferences are...I would say from the SFNO to the B11 there are quite a few options.

My vote? NMSFNO.
The straighter handle lets you hang on further back for batoning....and can be cheaper that a FSH.
I debated this quite a bit myself, but your millage may vary.

@Tomthebaker- why saber instead of the flat ground? just curious

Very true, NMSFNOs are cheaper and easier to find. I beat the piss out of mine, it's a great knife and fairly light for its size.

By the numbers it looks like the SARsquatch would be the ticket. It really seems specifically designed to be an all around camp knife. It’s on the “eventually” list for me as I really can’t justify another 6-7 inch user right now.

On the other hand I have never really done any hunting/skinning and such as I’m sure some other guy’s here do and don’t know what would be good for that application.

For hiking when ounces really count I have a an INFI Scrapper 5 which is a whole lot of knife for it’s weight.

And for camp tasks I got a CG Tankbuster when they came out and it’s a beast for it’s size.

Well, the saber grind has more weight, in the right spot, for chopping. The full-flat ground I have seen are NOT the HHFSH at all, but the thinner FSH, or the thicker and heavier, but not necessarily better chopper, the HO(G)FSH. (Some call it HOFSH, others call it HOGFSH - same knife.)

I have to agree on the "greatness" of the BWM LE ... and indeed the BWM CG ... picking between the Basic 11 and those two is very much a dilemma ... only weight and price seperate them on a clear basis ... not "comfort" or "performance" as all three work very well ... but the Basic 11 is noticeably cheaper ...

I have a particular love of the BWM LE though as the balance, weight, comfort is so close to the old SHBM which for "years" was regarded as the ideal choice for a chopper that you could carry .... infact the BWM LE is perhaps "more" comfortable ... but the Basic 11 is just as good comfort wise ...

The thing is ... when you get to use so many models as if you're looking for the "best" ... you start to realise it is "splitting hairs" with some models ... so much so it is hard to leave the house because of the difficulty in making a selection ...

However HHFSH's are not cheap ... sometimes it makes more sense to try the cheaper ones first as if you cannot fault a cheaper blade then IMO it is often simply only "matched" ... not "bettered" when you go for a more expensive model ...

Thanks Tom- that was helpful. :)

Butter- This is a long process- enjoy it.
