Despite a huge number of hours spent reading Busse, Swamp Rat & Scrap Yard forums and associated web sites all I have achieved is that I am now considering too many possible knives, having too many unanswered questions, and have too little money to make more than one purchase.

Starting out interested in the 10inch blades, I now find myself looking at something smaller and more general purpose; I am deliberately avoiding the terms 'every day carry' and 'survival knife' but that would be its prime intended purpose.

My only personal preference in any knife is that it balances forward of the guard/first finger area... I do not like butt heavy knives.

Nothing gives answers better than as the old Packard line said "ask the man who drives one" !!! So if you had to choose/recommend only one Busse 'kin' knife which would it be?

In this case I am particularly asking the folks who own them but all thoughts are welcome!

What can I say? Each family member has a style of knife that is similar enough to be relatively equal so since my favorite and first was the SRKW Battle Rat size blade I say you can't go wrong with a Busse FBMCG or a SYKCO Dogfather CG even though the DFCG is made of thicker stock. For me it is really between the BR and the FBMCG and if I had never held the Res C SRKW handle on the BR I wouldn't consider any thing but the FBMCG. The DF has those Res C handles also. If you had added another 1/2" to that description the SRKW Rat Daddy would be the champ. If you have to spend the rest of your life with this knife choice I don't think you can go wrong with any of the three 10" blades or the Rat Daddy. Grab one and don't look back.

Tell us where you are located and if there is a hog near by they may let you test drive several models.

The BM in any form is generally a winner. It was the first Busse I saw and bought (10 years later, lol). Bearing in mind that knives are just tools, the first thing I would do is identify the role or job I have in mind for the knife and go from there. As long as you don't want to EDC or do fine work then go for the BM it's a winner in every situation i've used it.

You will end up with a selection in the end like most guys here, the infi is addictive. I started with a FFBM last summer now i'm up to 2xFFBM, CGBM, HR, ASH, Warboar and I got 2 more on order before even seeing the ganzaa pics for next weekend!

Thanks mate for your unexpected and very kind reply; I live in Australia and maybe there are some Aussie hogs not too far away who share you generous spirit!:)

Smaller and general purpose...Active Duty, Game Warden, Cultellus are rather plentiful right now on the exchange or from Busse

I am sure other Hogs will have some suggestions for you, and welcome to the trough!

I got to handle a Game warden .170 thick and it's a hefty critter! Nice steel, the color of the satin steel will have hyponotized for hours on end. It is a nice knife for your uses.

Mate I would be happy for you to have a look at and a try on my user Busse's, if you are ever up in Brisbane, let me know.

the cultie is widely available now, and a wonderful blade profile for edc or even as a small "survival" knife.

but i think the badger III series is about the best combination of size and shape.

1Tracker... I am still hoping to gather up some HOGs for a Chop-in/ "show & tell"/ meet & greet event of some sort later in the spring, maybe after BLADE if we can't get it off the ground before... I don't know where in NJ you live, but I'm west of Philly and there's a bunch of us in the PA.-NJ. mebbe even north MD, & DE area. Where are you in relation to Philadelphia? How far?

The ZTSH (thin Ergo Steel Heart) is my idea of the perfect all-rounder. Mine is a Custom Shop model, but the regular ones would work equally well, if not as sexily.

The Fusion Steel Heart immediately comes to mind as a weight-forward design that will serve the heavy duty chores very well.

It has an 8-inch blade, so it's long for handy-carry daily, but with the right sheath is entirely manageable... I like a cross-draw kydex for field work, keeps the size manageable for working and sitting, is secure and fast to access.

Slightly smaller is the Hell Razor or Mud Razor... But they are more of a neutral balance....

Another option is the older Ratweiler - it's more forward balanced, about the size of an Fusion Steel Heart...

And here are a few for size comparisons...

Badger Attack III

Well Rat-30 beat me to it. If you want smaller than 10" but a survival knife than I would have to agree with a Steel Heart. Straight Handle, Ergo, or the bigger of the 3, a Fusion Steel Heart. Any of those can handle most any camp/survival task you'll come across. But you also mentioned that you wanted it to be an EDC? To me that's a totally different category, EDC means 9" OAL or less. But that's just me, there are plenty of guys here that daily carry a 10" OAL Busse. Which would be a Badger or one of the new SAR5. Not a bad choice for a camp knife, although I think you start to limit yourself in the chopping area (although TL does fine with a Badger).

Personally, I carry 2 knives while out in the Sierras. Something in the midsize range, ASH1, and something in the chopper range, SHBM/CGFBM. One goes on the hip and the other goes on the day pack. Best of both worlds. Check out the Exchange and the main site currently still had the ASH1. Good luck and welcome to the maddness.

Im guessing this is a question better answered by HOG's with more blades than me. All my INFI is BUTT-HEAVY so to speak. But then again my collection isnt very diverse(all ASH's and Gamewardens). Soon enough I should have some blade forward designs though.

edit: I also agree that EDC and Survival are vastly different categories. While my GW would suffice should I be left with it alone I would prefer my ASH for long-term survival given the choice. Heck an Ontario machete would make a better "survival" knife than any EDC I have,Busse included.

huh???
good thinkin'
i'm in!

munchi-cool-
i would suggest a mid sized knife like a batac or badger III (if you could find one) or something like a ratmandu from the swamp.
but just know you'll want them all as soon as you get your first one.
good luck
