Ohayo, I'm new to Blade forums & not the best at navigation yet.
SO!
I'm in the market for a Busse & would like to know the cutting ability/edge holding/retention on average. I know geometry will widely affect this but how long will the edge stay in comparison to other steels would be great.
I'm familiar with ATS-34, (most of) the 10-series, S30V, D2, 154cm, VG-1 & 10 & quite a few others but any of those I've used & I know the best. For the most part in that order.
It doesn't really matter it because I'm buying one anyway at the Eugene show but am just curious. I've had my thoughts about it & someone I talked to a couple days ago (how doesn't own one just "used") said INFI has an ok edge & holds it. So it re-sparked my curiosity.

I need an extremely tough, corrosion resistant knife. So Busse it is.

At the moment I'm using a TOPS Tracker & reground the straight edge for better chopping & hacking but it rusts SOOOOO really. I take really good care of my knives but I live, hike & pack in Oregon.

Also, the edge holding of INFI to SR101? Toughness vs 3V? A2?

Also, also, any booths at the Eugene show I should know of for Rat & Busse? The more the merrier.
I'm looking for the right Busse & a Rodent Waki.

Thank you.

According to Jim Ankersons rope cutting tests INFI holds an edge on par with 154CM. I only have one INFI blade Ive used pretty well now, the KZ II and I can tell you first hand that when chopping wood it has the best edge retention out of SR 77, SR 101, 1095, and SK5. INFI is only a slightly higher end steel when cutting through soft material but when it comes to chopping it really shines.
SR 101 is my favorite steel and I have used it really extensively and it holds a fantastic edge. I'm not sure if it keeps a working edge any longer than S30V but it keeps a really sharp shaving edge longer than any steel I've used.

Some much more experienced Hogs will be of more help to you more info but just thought I'd chime in.

Hi Tongpu,

Welcome.

I can’t say much on the technical aspect of comparison, in fact there wasn’t very much time between when I started looking into a good fixed blade and ended up here. It was almost a strait line after I started searching for the toughest knives out there.

What I can comment on is stain resistance and edge retention.

One of my most abused knives is an Game Warden sized HACK from a Ganza a couple years ago, It’s like a satin finished rail road spike with a thick convex edge on it. I’ve done everything from pound it through stuff, to strike firesteel, to forget it in the mud overnight. Sure it could use a stropping, but I’ve never actually sharpened it and after a little soap and water wipe down, it’s essentially unchanged from when I got it. INFI really is pretty awesome stuff.

Infi is for chopping and other hard uses. It does not shine like the other super steels when it comes to edge retention. It's a great hard use steel.

It's pretty comparable to 3V in hard use applications. INFI is more stain resistant, though.

Thanks, nydude. That helps a lot. I've only read what Busse says about the stain resistance. Good to hear from an actual customer.

not bad for as hard as i was hitting the steel. it wasn't shaving sharp but it would still slice an apple.

For me (ymmv), INFI is the best steel I have ever had/used on a knife. I was turned on to it roughly 4 years ago (I think) and have never looked back. All thanks to a Hell Razor...

The hell razor is what got me hooked as well

I haven't used infi on smaller knives but have used my BWM extensively chopping and splitting. I'm amazed at its edge retention chopping wood.
