Hi Guys,

I only learnt about busse knives when I joined here at blade forums.

My question is: In researching busse gear I have come across:

Busse company
Busse Combat
Scrapyard
Ratmandu

Are these completely different companies or sister organisations of the same business..

Currently, when I refer to busse I am referring to all of the above. Is that bad form. Should I be treating these as separate entities?

Thanks in advance...

The ratmandu is a Swamp Rat knife. Jerry Busse started busse combat knives (correct me if I'm wrong) his brothers run Scrap Yard, and Swamp Rat. Scrap Yard is at the bottom end of the spectrum, very affordable and extremely durable. Swamp Rat has better steel and offers G10. Busse is the high end.

busse combat, about us

Both Scrap Yard and Swamp Rat are generally using SR101 now. Busse use the propriety Infini Steel. Scrap Yard has produced blades in Infini as well (Scrapper 5 LE).

"Busse" and "Busse Kin" are all acceptable .. :)

They're all related and operate out of Wauseon, Ohio. Busse seems to be the flagship company, while Swamp Rat and Scrapyard offer more affordable content that is just as good.

Jerry Busse created Busse Combat Knife Company in 1992. Some years ago, Jerry's wife Jennifer founded Swamp Rat Knife Company, then even fewer years ago, Jerry's brother Dan founded Scrap Yard Knife Company. Busse, Swamp Rat and then Scrap Yard, in that order, is usually the higher end to lower end on the cost spectrum. All are great quality and use a few various steels with the exception of Busse which soley uses INFI, which is Jerry's proprietary steel and heat treat. All are tough and all are enjoyed by Busse enthusiasts. Hopefully this helps and I'm accurate. It's late and I'm tired, so I may be overlooking something here. :)

Cliff notes:
Busse Combat - Jerry Busse - Collectors designated as "Hogs"
Swamp Rat - Jennifer Busse (Jerry's wife) - Collectors designated as "Rats"
Scrap Yard - Dan Busse (Jerry's brother) - Collectors designated as "Dogs"

Also, the Busse Company store is run by another gentleman (Skunk). He stocks what ever INFI he can get his grubby mitts on. If he has it in stock, it is already made, and there is no wait time. You order it from him, and get it very quickly.

When ordering from Busse direct, they are typically made to order, and will not be ready to ship for some time.

Unless you are ordering from an Ganza event (usually after the big knife shows, they will offer up select offerings to us Hogs here to order). They will also occasionally offer up models on here to order, and it is a scramble to see who gets what.

So, the best advice is to hang out, pay attention, and start reading. Read all the stickies at the top of the forum. Spend some time browsing the resources (Bussecollector.com etc).

Mostly, relax, try not to get too worked up, and enjoy your self. It is a pretty laid back group here, for the most part, unless something good is being offered...........Then, trust no one, we are a tricky lot, and will knock you down, trample you, and hog the Infi right from under your snout!

Highlights

Scrapyard=Poor Man's Busse ( but still awesome) comfy handles, great steel, lifetime warranty, offers many blades at one time, blades usually have dog reference or scrapyard reference names, ie The Dog father, hot diggity dog dagger, scrapivore

SwampRat=Middle class Busse. More edgy design IMO, great steel, more handle options (g10, and micarta), offer many blades, swords and tomahawks at one time, life time warranty, usually has Rat reference names, ie the ratmandu, Rat trap, howling rat

Busse= rich Man's Knives. Great patented steel INFI, lifetime warranty, offers 1 to 2 blades at a time (usually), life time warranty, option to make bacon comments, usually has names that make you pee your pants, ie Nuclear Meltdown Fusion Battle Mistress, Nuclear Seahorse, Shiva Rex, Tank Buster :)

All family owned

When I ordered my Rodent Rucki from Swamp Rat the other day I got an email from paypal stating I had paid "Busse Combat Knife Company".

Considering the owners of the two companies are married, its likely they have shared accounts for billing. Jerry aint the only one who brings home the bacon:eek::eek::eek::eek:

That's what I was unsure about :)

Thanks that clears it up..

Thanks to all the other posters.. Hard for newbys to translate all of the strange terms and acronyms...

I also am more comfortable with the idea of referring to someone as a Rat or a Hog :)

all great info.

there was one Busse made out of SR101 though ;)

anyone know what it was ?

I have one but have not looked at it in a while.

Before you let the Hog out of the bag, you could just send that one my way ;) Nobody else would want a Busse that isn't INFI

The Taliwhacker ( I may have misspelled it) was SR101.

You did not misspell it. For everyone's info, Jerry made thousands of these(not sure of the number, jerry does not brag) for our boys fighting in Desert Storm in the 90's, and donated them. No charge.
OINK

The Tali was made post 9/11 for the boys and girls initially heading off to Arsecrackestan.
