Busse folder: Tip up or down?

I say tip up, and here is my reasoning:

Tip up is more convenient for everyday carry. It may be a tiny bit more dangerous, but I think that the benefits out weigh the possible dangers.

The benefits are: Easier deployment, greater familiarity (most hard use knives are tip up), quicker deployment, and less chance of loosing grip of the knife as you change the position in your hand.

The only benefit to tip down carry is that it is possibly "safer". There is no chance of the blade opening while you pull it out of your pocket.

I've been around knives long enough to respect the sharp part. I don't need any "child proofing" designs to keep me safe. Give me what works best, not what you think will protect me the best.

What do you think?

OK, I'll bite -
Tip Up and license the opening hole and Compression Lock from spyderco (the opening device and lock preferences are bonus answers :D ).

This was polled either here or at the Busse home forum a few years ago, but I don't remember the results (IIRC, it was a long thread).

So Jerry, what did you decide ? :D

Ambidextrous tip up/down like the Spyderco Chinook II. :)

That way everyone gets what they want/need.

My vote goes to tip up however you make a good point.

I've handled The Folder, and I know the actual design, regarding tip-up or tip-down. I wish I could tell you, but I can't.

I think you'll all be happy with what you get.

Jam your thumb on a partially open tip up folder (Sebenza) and you'll quickly see why it became tip down in a belt pouch.

I don't even CARE about your arguments for tip up carry! BTW, cashiers do NOT like getting bloody money.

Jerry isn't going for tip up either. He's said this before.

I prefer tip up, but this is not a particularly critical design feature for me. Just a preference. In any case, the only time I've ever had a problem with poking my thumb was on a lock that was poorly designed, so the blade did not stay in place when closed, and a clip that was too loose, so the knife did not stay put with the blade against the front seam of my pocket. Stabbing yourself is bad when it happens to you (once bit, twice shy or something), but I just don't think that this is a significant risk in a well designed knife, as any Busse certainly is. Maybe not worth arguing about, as you say, but lots of discussions here are about sharing opinions and not really worth arguing about

I agree. I have a fairly loose Emerson Commander tip up, and somehow I've managed to never poke myself while pulling it out of my pocket. I think people that advocate tip down only are a little paranoid.

Errrrr. . . . . things change. . . . I get soberererer. . . . uhhhhh. . . it's a close call at this point. . . .

I have dramaticaly changed the folder since its first preview at BLADE West. . . . . . . . Holy Yowza!!!

Can't wait !! Oh, guess I can after all :D :D I just hope when the folder is available my folder fund will have enough in it. It's like a college fund, only different (IRS does not believe me that it is tax deductible:grumpy: )

Anyway, whatever the final verdict, it will be worth the wait (after all, in the mean time, the AD or HD is a killer pocket knife, or is it a pocket-killer knife  )

O.K. Jerry, we have waited long enough, GIVE US THE FOLDER!!!

I looked around at Blade West and couldn't find it.

Hmmm ...OK I can live with things changing.

But, could you do like Rick Hinderer and have it so it could either be tip up or down?

Actually, I don't care as long as you provide those very expensive (for the size) covers for the clip mounts, holes.

To me clips are a prequel to a lost knife story and my Busse folder (if I should live so long as to get one), will be carried in a nice secure belt pouch. Tip down of course.

It still won't replace the UNbroken Busse worn at the other side, but it will replace the Sebenza.

BTW, I got sobererer too. Not all it's cracked up to be is it?

Makes me cranky and most people are really ugly when your vision clears. LOL

Booze is sort of like that 'soft' lens they use to film older movie stars to make them look better. YaknowwhadImean?

Tip down, frame lock. Completely made from INFI, including the clip. Maybe micarta handles... or just straight INFI handles but thick.

good dealeo or is it dealio?

Jerry has mentioned that he isn't leaning toward anything but tip down due to possible unwanted opening while in the pocket. I can see his reasoning. I sure wouldn't want to shove my hand in my pocket and end up with bloody fingers because my blade opened up through some jarring action.

Crap! Looks like I need to read through all the posts. Dramatic redesign you say? Come on Jerry how much longer do we really have to wait for this baby?

'bout two weeks. :p

ETA: tip down for me, started carrying like that so it is just habit.
