Pretty new to these fine implements and have a few basic questions I was unable to find answers to.

1. What is the weight difference between paper/canvas micarta and G10 handles?

2. What is the size difference between the micarta and G10 handles?

3. What does the G10 handle feel like as far as texture? The reason I ask is because I had an Emerson with textured G10 and hated it. I like smoother G10 tho.

Thanks dudes and dudettes

Hey Wiggity-Schwiggity,

1. What is the weight difference between paper/canvas micarta and G10 handles?
G10 is heavier than canvas Micarta, which is heavier than paper Micarta (paper and canvas are not the same). I don't have exact ratios, though.

2. What is the size difference between the micarta and G10 handles?
G10 and Micarta are just material designations, so there's no size difference. They are as big or as small as you cut them to be.

3. What does the G10 handle feel like as far as texture? The reason I ask is because I had an Emerson with textured G10 and hated it. I like smoother G10 tho.
G10 is really hard and, in my opinion, on a scale of 0 being totally frictionless and 10 being really immovable, I'd say it's probably a 3.
In regard to knife handles though, 0 to 10, I'd say more like a 7, but that's a pretty subjective scale for an already subjective rating, I think.

Okay, so is the G10 textured like an Emerson folder handle? Kind of similar to grip tape or the top of a skateboard?

No the g10 has exactly the same texture pattern as the micarta does. Not the grip tape feel or sandpaper feel.

Also may be worth noting, G10 is the strongest, paper micarta the weakest, with canvas micarta being in the middle. That being said they all hold up just fine for handles.

Good to know, thanks.

How do you measure strength?

How are canvas and paper different?

I'm curious about this, too. In terms of strength on their own, fiberglass > canvas > paper, but what happens when it's turned into a laminate?

The patterning on Busse scales is nothing like Emersons. It isn't anything colse to being as aggersive.

I believe Garth was referring to breaking strength and chipping.

Paper micarta is in essence compressed paper soaked in epoxy-like substance, because paper has no fibres, that would distribute applied force, it will be easiest to break.
