Sometimes people bitch about spending money on a Busse, often with some BS about being able to buy a knife for a fraction of the cost that can do as much, or nearly as much, as a Busse. Well, I actually just figured out tonight a hidden benefit in Busse that I never saw as a benefit -- namely, that Busses are NOT available in stores. Let me explain... (Rant mode "on")
I have been waiting for months for a Fallkniven H1 hunting knife in 3G (SGPS-super gold powder steel) to come out. A big attraction of the knife is the steel, which has tremendous edge retention ability -- critical for hunters field dressing game. So I find out today that instead of a limited run of 200 knives, it is going to become part of Fallkniven's standard lineup forever. And, for whatever reason, this will necessitate a price increase of @ 30%. BUT, Fallkniven says that everyone who put in a "pre-order" will still get the pre-order price. Great, so now I am on top of the world. Well, the fall came quickly. I went to the Fallkniven site and for the H1, the prices were there for the VG10 version and the 3G version. Then it dawns on me -- those are retail prices, and who pays retail??? So I start checking a lot of stores that carry Fallkniven and compare what they are selling the knives for versus what they go for on the Fallkniven site (retail). A little math and a little logic and it becomes apparent to me that the knife will very likely be even less expensive than my originally quoted price if I just wait for it to show up in US stores. So now I feel like I almost got ripped. I don't mind waiting, but I do mind paying for what I think is a good deal only to see that I could have gotten the same knife for $40 less in most stores even after they mark up the price.

And therein is yet another reason why I like Busse. When I buy, I know the knife I am getting is not going to show up in some store for 70% of what I paid for it because the store can buy wholesale or gets a volume discount. And I know when Busse says that there are only going to be 200 knives and that's it, I know they won't be changing their mind. Don't get me wrong-- Fallkniven makes a great knife, but for anybody who is looking for a knife, my .02 is that Busse (and SRKW since they basically share the same business practices) is the better deal. And not to pick on just Fallkniven. We all know there are a lot of companies that do business just like Fallkniven.
