Busse knife coating chipping/flaking?

Has anyone experienced chipping/flaking of the coating on their busse knives without actual use?

A couple months ago I received an awesome modified SFNO from the good folks at Busse. Actually, I had them send the knife over to Eric Lind at Mashed Cat for a sheath once it was completed.

I was very impressed overall with the final product, but examining the edge, my fingernail accidentally chipped/scrapped off what seemed to be a layer of the coating. I've provided shots for reference.

I thought that was strange, so I began rubbing the part before the edge with my thumb to see if more would come off and to my surprise it did.

Now you'll notice there's still another layer of coating underneath which seems immune to flaking/scratching. I asked for the 'urban shadow' camo.

IMO in the grand scheme of things, it seems like a minor issue, but a part of me is just curious. Is this case unusual, and if so, what could be the causes?

Only busse can say for sure
Eta in my experience there is no ryhme or reason to lots of such. I do know if you contact them with any concerns they are more than accommodating. Esp Lexi and Pokey. Garth grinds and drinks too much

In my experience, the camo coatings come off fairly easily, but the base coat is as tough as usual.

That shouldnt happen and you have a right to question it but if its a user i would say it adds character and if its at the edge no biggie because i would think it would be better for cutting not to have a coating at the edge.

tell you what, i'll take it off your hands at a reasonable discount due to the damaged finish!

In my experience, the black coating flakes off without use. I've had at least 3 or 4 blades do that. Never bothered me because coated blades aren't usually collectors items. I use most of my knives then strip the coated ones eventually. It looks like your blade is urban camo which has a layer of black underneath.

I don't know of a single company whose coating lasts forever. That being said, I've researched enough to know that Busse has some of the most durable coatings out there. Be mindful that not all of Busse coatings are equally durable.

For example. Fallkniven makes great knives. Their coating, not so much.... Busse is wayyyyyy ahead of them on that count!

No worries. It's just the epidermis. Rub some sunscreen on her before playing in the sun.

I wonder if it is tape residue, or a little bit of the top color came off of it from taping the edge

I get that it's a way to make more money off us, but I don't know why Busse puts on coatings on blades made for hard use, they never last. Info should be naked.

The newer coatings are usually pretty tough, but anything can flake. Temperature, how the coating was applied, how it was prepped, etc. Sucks, but it can happen.

The old flat black coatings were terrible with this in my experience

It's clearly ruined, send to me for disposal..... ;)

Haha appreciate the humor guys. :D But it looks like you've helped me confirm my suspicions: that the top coating is not very durable to begin with and as a user, who cares, it's not a display piece. I guess I was just surprised that it came off as easily as it did. But the base layer coat seems pretty tough, no need to send it back
