A Hoods Woods Product Review
The Battle Mistress

Notice; At the request of Busse blades we no longer maintain the Mistress article on this site. We think removing it is a good idea. Despite what you may have seen in several of our videos we do not recommend Busse knives and we are currently re-editing these early videos in order to remove all references to the product. When the re-edit is finished this page will be removed from our site. This is not to say that Busse does not make a good knife but there are many excellent knives on the market. The choice of a knife is an entirely subjective decision and should be made by the purchaser after handling the knife.

A knife is more than steel. It is a sum total of parts, The steel, the blade design, the handle design, the handle composition, the fit of the handle, the tang, the sheath, the price versus value, the fit and finish of the knife parts, availability, customer service and the overall fit for the user are all critical when making a decision. You can join our free forum for discussions of these topics. You can also go to our Blades section for information about other makers.

If you still want to read this early review, the article appeared in the March 98 issue of American Survival Guide

Ya know if you Email Ron Hood or Jerry Busse either will explain this to you :) The quick answer is Jerry and Ron had an issue(s) and seperated ways. Also if I might play moderator, could everyone refrain from turning this question/post into something ugly? :D

My recollection was that the dispute was a disagreement about Busse service related issues, not the quality of the knives themselves. Maybe it would be better if anyone interested searched the original posts where Jerry and Ron spoke for themselves. All I can say is that both guys are experts in their areas and have the courage to stand up for what they believe is right. They may not agree, but that doesn't make either less creditable.
I think Busse knives are outstanding. When you finally get them.
I understand Fehrman knives are comparable. That I gotta see! That's why I'm trying to acquire one. Until then, I'm more than happy to keep my BM, SH II and NO as my main heavy use knives. But that Hoods designed Fehrman looks incredible.

I only have the Peacemaker, but I can attest that the Fehrman knives are VERY good quality and excellent customer service. I haven't put it through the paces yet, but I'm expecting the steel (CPM 3V) to be quite comparable to Infi.

Bill, I wholeheartedly agree. The relational change between those parties is best left to those parties.

Suffice it to say that a decision was made, whatever it was based on, and it is what it is.

I think the mods should watch this to be sure that it doesn't snowball....

I bought a Fehrman First Strike, I got tired of waiting for the new Busse's. I love it and have never looked back.

:p Well mine is better than yours! Etc. Etc.
I hope this thread will be closed or deleted!

"[E]ntirely subjective"? If that were true, it would mean that no knife can ever be identified as objectively superior to/inferior to any other knife -- a very doubtful proposition. Even given issues of taste, style, purpose, and budget, there are objective quality differences between knives and objective differences in how they perform at a given task.

IIRC it was a thread like this that pretty much wiped out the outdoor survival forum over at knifeforums.com.

As near as I could figure out it was a matter of Busse supporters & Busse critics getting REAL personal & nasty. A shame that differences of opinion can't be handled in a civil manner.

The reason why the Busse Review article was removed is because Ron had used busses in his survival videos and because of that, lots of people ordered them. The wait for Battle Mistress was very long and folks complained to Ron about the delays even though he had nothing to do with that part. Busse are great knives and if they weren't, Ron would have never had used them in the 1st place. Fehrmans are great too I hear, but I don't like the finger cutout. To me it seems like that's more suited on a fighter than actual survival knife. That is why I don't own any Fehrmans or Tops knives. I believe both companies make top notch blades and yes, it would be interesting to see some tests but that would be like warfare I'm afraid.

"I got tired of waiting for the new Busse's" Amen Brother same here.

Picked up a PeaceMaker - What a Knife !! :)

in regards to busse i guess to me some things are worth the wait. however if two weeks is too long you can get em quick from shomer-tec and from the exchange forum. no excuses to not own a busse or two

Someone reffereded to Ron and Jerry as experts in there own feild just as a point the more a person is an expert or the more educated one gets does not necessarily mean that they are that much more likely to agree with everyone. I know that wasn't the point of saying they were experts but I have seen plenty of experts in different feilds dig in and start and argument best to leave it to them. I cactually watched one time while two PUBLISHED P.H.D.s in their feild go inot a knock down drag out fist fight. SO if they want to go at it best to eat your dinner and look the other way.

The deletion of a thread doesn't seem to be very freedom of speech like o me.

Hey folks,

I think that you all just about covered it accurately and fairly. I have a nice collection of Busse knives and I'm more than happy about the performance and quality. I have a lot of respect for Jerry's accomplishments and I hope that someday this will all just retire as a topic.

I am very happy with Eric Fehrman on all levels and I think that there is plenty of room for both companies.

Knives are very personal tools and features I look for in a blade might not fit another user.

Best wishes...

Ron
