I don't not a own a Busse, but I want one for outdoors use, does anyone own or know of a knife that would do well in light chopping, batoning, and general camp use?

Any number of Steel Hearts would probably fit your purposes; there are plenty of variations from straight-handled to Ergos to Fusions (all of which are handle designations).

Another model that comes to mind is the Satin Jack. Not exactly built as a heavy chopper with a ~6" blade, but a good all-purpose blade that would stand up to batoning and "light" chopping.

Your best place to find any of these would be to look on the Busse/Swamp Rat/Scrap Yard For Sale forum here.

Welcome to the Busse forum, I'm glad that you stopped by. There are a number of Busses that would handle the jobs that you state. Stick around and I'm sure you will get a lot of suggestions.

I see you say you are from Iowa, which part? I was raised in SW Iowa and I have lived in Eastern and Northern Iowa as well

:D:D

Thanks for the comments so far, and Eric, my name is Eric too, I'm being raised in Central Iowa.

Small world ;)

My name is Arik and I live in SE Iowa.

Edited to add:

Keep in mind that legal carry for IA is <5"; if that is where you do your camping - unless on your own land or private property

How about a Hell Razor or Badger? Those might be easier to find on the exchange. BATACs will be at the company store in the future, if you are willing to wait.

Hell Razor! That is the one! Is pretty expensive and a good outdoor blade?
Dead Head-When you say <5" do you mean overall or blade? P.S. I all of my camping is on private land. Iowa camp grounds are horrible.

Thanks raining, but sense you reminded me of a Hell Razor would you know how much one of these would run for?

for a good general camp knife, a 6-7 inch blade is probably the most useful.
the badgers are great, but you may be limited by the shorter blade.

here's some that should suit you: hell razor, any steel heart or variation, any natural outlaw or variation, basic 7, basic 5,

some larger ones: battle mistresses or variations, ruck kensai, ak-47,

287, hmm not too bad, considering I thought it would be more. The basic 5/7 would be another choice, I really like the res-c handles, how much are those costing these days?
Thanks everyone for posting, and being so helpful.

Barny,

The $287 was the original list price. You'll never find one for that now-- more like 450.

Your most reasonable aprroach would be to find a Badger Attack. Since they just came out they are still reasonably priced ~$300, and they will eventually appear in the Company Store.

I've been using a Badger on my last two camping trips. It is a wonderful knife for many things, but it isn't much of a chopper. It is also marginal for batoning through firewood. It is plenty tough enough for the task, but is a little short to be ideal.

The best Busses as overall camp knives, in my opinion, would be a Natural Outlaw or a Steel Heart. Unfortunately, that entails a much larger expenditure. The SFNO or the SHSH will set you back $700+, and thats IF you can find one.

.02 from a fellow camper:)

Oh jeez, thanks XMP, I don't know about the hell razor, but does anyone know what the basic 5 or 7 are selling for?

i recently picked up a basic 5 on the exchange for 240. i think there is still a basic 7 available too.

I don't think the Hell Razors are selling for $450 that is pretty steep.

If they are selling for that much there are some seriously desperate folks around.
