Does Busse Combat keep prototypes of the blades they run and sell? For instance, when the ASHs are all out will they keep at least one to make more from in the future? Reason I ask is because I want a INFI Ice Pick and was wondering if I could contact Jerry and ask him to make one for me.

If you mean the NIP, you'd be best by posting in the WTB section of the Exchange.

They are sweet...

While I'm sure that Jerry keeps prototypes and exemplars of the many different knives that he has made, he would not use them to produce a requested blade. AFAIK, at some point in Jerry's career as a knife designer/maker, he went CNC, (Computer Numerical Control). This means that, with the appropriate computer files and the correct thickness INFI stock , he can cut and "rough out", (for final tempering, grinding and finishing), the blade (or Nuclear Ice Pick) you want.
Actually, you should talk to Garth at the Custom Shop as that's where they make the requested blades. Be forewarned that "Customs", (blades not currently in production) are currently approx. $100 per blade inch and, the last I heard, the waiting period is on the order of two years. Try posting in the "Want to buy" section and haunt the "for Sale" sub-forum and you may get lucky. BTW, this is one of the reasons to go to a show that Busse attends and get up front at the table, as you never know what will be available and the CG models are quite reasonably priced, to boot. Good luck and happy hunting. Pete

Wow!!! $100 bucks for an inch!?!?!?! Whew, forget that. All I was wanting was an Ice Pick! haha. Im talking to a guy wh has one but his is scratched or missing some coating and i want the NIP to be in mint condition. ANy of you guys got any? Advice?

Not to mention the add I have placed on the ATB forum hasnt garnered ONE response :( SURELY TO GOD, there is someone out there who has a new NIP that they will trade with me on....

Get that one, strip it and polish it! It's fairly simple, and with the NIP you don't have to worry about ruining an edge. Have fun with it!

There's always begging. No Regrets, right?

Seriously, I think the NIP was thought up as a way to recycle a bit of the steel that blades were cut from. There may not even be a legitimate pattern for it. Certainly, you could ask for something similar, but you might wait a long, looooong time.

Best trough-fu advice I can give is patience. Just about all INFI comes up in the exchange at one time or another. The NIP wasn't that limited, and is outside the realm of normal collection obsessions, so one might surface when someone is weeding out the safe.

If you really can't wait and want a cool ice pick, you might try this guy:

(warning, non-INFI content. He's a smith who posts on Bladeforums. Never gotten anything from him, but the pics look wicked.)

thanks guys. im just dying to get an ice pick made of the best - INFI. i have a swamp rat ice pick and i love it, and im sure its pretty much as tough as the NIP but i still want the NIP. SR101 in an ice pick is about as good as INFI as far as im concerned. INFI outshines the SR101 in edge retention but with an ice pick, you dont have to worry about edge retention.

yeah I don't really see the point in an infi icepick, you could even make an ice pick out of mild steel and it would be awesome.

Why is that? Ice picks are used for stabbing/breaking off pieces of ice, etc. With this in mind, its important to have a tough steel as far as i am concerned. Especially, if you plan to use it to pry, etc. I have one made of SR-101 (which I love) but I want one made of INFI

I think he means if you had one of say 1084 or 1095 or A2 it would do well. I know what you mean reconseed, he's just saying if you cant get one there are alternatives.

Im wanting it as a collectors piece. What are the chances that I could get one of the NIPs and send it back to Jerry at the shop and have him refinish it for me? Do they do that for knives made by BCS?

the nips were a cutoff design. I don't think they would have been designed that way if jerry wanted to make the best ice pick possible. they were sort of a "what can we do with this extra cutoff infi?" type deal. same with the swamp rat versions, wich were slightly different shaped since they came from different knife cutout scraps.

I actually used it as an ice pick after doing a very tight turks head knot paracord wrap - and it was just okay. the point is blunt compared to a nice slim round ice pick, and the handle is tiny for moderately sized male hands like mine. you can't get a lot of force out of the handle because theres almost nothing there.

it's a fun thing to have, but as an ice pick it really falls short. also the bottle opener doesn't really work that well either.

sorry to be such a downer on the design, but I had several, used them, and wasn't very impressed.

Nevertheless, I still want one. I love my swamp rat ice pick. I like its shorter profile combined with the fact that its made of pointy SR-101:D
