I am planning on buying a Basic 5 and saw that you can get them with either a leather sheath or a kydex one. Which do you think is a better all around sheath? The kydex sheath is about $20 more. Thanks, Bob

Kydex can be a pain with smaller knives. I'd go leather since it is a 5" blade. with the 7 or 9 I'd spring for kydex.

Pardon my ignorance Ryu, but why is kydex a pain with smaller knives?

I am wondering the same thing Ryu, My Nimravus Cub's sheath works well.

The sheath on the MS loaner i had was fine, and it only has a 3 inch blade.....

It comes down to preference guys. I hate kydex on a small knife. It's loud and can make it hard to draw a knife with a smaller blade becasue of the way it holds on to the blade. My badger had a kydex rig and it would not let go of that knife for anything. One of my buddies actually stabed himself getting it out. I like a sheath that has a release of some sort. You pop a button and the knife comes free with ease. With kydex especially with a cliped sheath that you want to keep IWB more often than not you wind up drawing the knife and the sheath rather than just the knife. And you never know when you may need your knife to be quiet. I play war games with a group of friends about 4 times a year with the paint ball guns. And we go all out. No teams, we each just pick a different drop spot on my Uncles 50 acre lot in the country and stay there until everyone is dead. I carried a knife with a kydex rig three different times. And only twice did I need to draw my knife to either pry my way into something or cut a snare and both times that loud kydex got me killed. It was a Klang! Swoosh! Scrub! and then a POP! POP! POP! three shots in the side. and this was at night and I know they didn't see me until their lights were on. And their lights weren't on me until I drew my knife. So It is just personal opinion from my experience with several small blades sheathed in kydex that (for me anyway) it sucks on the smaller blades. Just an opinion though. get what you like.

I've got both a Basic #3 and #9 with the Kydex sheaths. I like the Kydex since I canoe a great deal and its a given that whatever I'm wearing is getting wet. Plus, they don't require much to keep them in good shape, as compared to leather.

It's a personal preference thing - think about how you will normally use the knife and pick the material based on that.

Very Good point Codeman. It depends on your activities. I try not to get wet unless I am going swimming and then I don;t take a knife to the pool. Not many of my hobbies or recreational stuff involves water so Kydex is not a big deal for me. I have to agree if you're in the water a lot kydex would be the one.
