I'd appreciate some input on which would be a better choice for general purpose use at camp/hiking, for example.

These two are the ones that have caught my eye. Both are relatively similar spec-wise.

One thing to note is that the Fehrman is available at $240 (with a satin finish) and the SJ TAC CG is a discontinued Busse model having an average secondary market price of about $350 (coated).

Share your thoughts.

Thanks.

Hey Bro,

Busse SJ TAC CG hands down. I have handled the Fermans and they are great knives that's for sure, BUT the SJ melts in your hand regarding fit and feel. It is an easy knife to use and enjoy and you will never regret the little extra doe. PLUS, you get a life time warranty, with a customer service from Busse Combat that is second to none. I have to say to that the tuffness of this steel is also a one of a kind, although CPM-3V is great steel as well. I will not knock Fehrman Knives at all, they are good knives, but my choice is with the Busse SJ. This is just my HO. Good luck in what you choose.

I've never handled the Ferman, but the SJT is a fantastic all-around knife. It and the BAIII are two of the all-time Busse greats. Well... maybe it, the BAIII and the FSH. Okay, it, the BAIII, the FSH, the .14GW and the BAD.

Man, I've got to get back to work, lol.

I would recommend the current Busse SAR4 SPCL which is of similar size or go for the Fehrman. I am sure the SJ is a great knife but Fehrman is on the same par with Busse for lower prices (still). Fehrmans cut as well as Busses, retention is even slightly better and the balance is just perfect. INFI is the strongest steel around, but CPM-3V is not too far from it.

You'll do fine with both that's a given; my choice, for what it's worth, would be the Busse but I admit I never held a Fehrman.

I think they'd both be great knives. I have Busse and Fehrman, but not in these 2 models. The SJTAC will probably be bigger (wider), with a wider handle. That may or may not appeal to you. Both steels are great. I've had great luck with both makers.
