I'm interested in purchasing a hard use knife for use while outdoors for camping, hiking, and so on. The SJ TAC CG and the Fehrman Shadow Scout have both caught my eye. Specs look pretty much the same (although someone on the General suggested that the SJ TAC may have a wider blade than the Shadow Scout which has a 1.25" wide blade).

I would appreciate if someone could tell me the blade width and overall weight of the SJ TAC CG.

Also, please share in your opinion of which of the two would be a better purchase. I undestand the replies may be biased since I'm asking the questions on the Busse forum, but I'm still looking forward to your opinions.

Thank you.

You should ignore both and go get ya a "Nuclear Meltdown Special Forces Natural Outlaw (NMSFNO)" from the Busse Company Store. It's a big blade but not much bigger than the SJTAC. It....is...OUTSTANDING!:thumbup:

Eric Ferhman makes terrific knives. His choice of steel is excellent and his heat treat of it and the overall fit and finish of his knives are second to none.

I sold mine because (1) the handle just never quite worked for me the way my Busse's handles do, and (2) because infi is a better steel.

It did occur to me to grind the handle of the Fehrman to fit me, but why bother when I could sell it and use the cash to buy a Busse that fit my hand and has better steel.

Are you getting that SJTAC for a good price? If so it might be the one to go for. If not, as Maqua said, the NMSFNO might be worth a look. I would also suggest you take a look at the Skinny ASH-1 - they are still at the Busse Company Store as well. That might be closer to what you are looking for than the NMSFNO which is more of a heavy knife.

I've read that a lot of folks don;t get on with the TAC handle so well, other have said that the SJTAC is the ultimate all-round camping knife. I don't mind the handle but I think there are more comfortable ones in the Busse range. That's a purely personal call and one that you can't easily make without handling the knives.

I'd like to pick up a Battle Mistress further down the road that's why I'd like one medium sized from either Busse or Fehrman.

Thanks.

Now you're talking!

The Skinny ASH-1 might hit the spot. It's not much different to my ASH-1 LE and I think that it's about perfect! But then, the SJTAC might fit that bill for you...

Edit:

Perhaps I should add that when I was looking for a really good knife, it came down to a decision between Busse and Ferhman. I had never held either. I ended up with a Busse (CG-FBM) just because once came up locally. A few more followed, as tends to happen around here.

I still wanted to try a Ferhman though so eventually I picked one up. Like I said initially, they are terrific knives and if Busse didn't exist, or I had never discovered them, I would have been very happy with the Fehrman once I sorted the grip out a little. But I had discovered Busse...

Sufler,
Don't have a weight for you but the CG SJTAC specs are as follows: Blade thickness = 3/16"; Blade width = 1 & 9/16"; Blade length = 6 & 7/16" from handle slabs to tip; OAL = 12". I like the CG SJTAC, I have 5. I also have a Fehrman First Strike and like it as well. BTW, specs on NMSFNO: Bt = 0.22"; Bw = 1 & 13/16": Bl = 8 & 3/16"; OAL = 13 & 15/16".
Pete

Thanks guys. I appreciate the feedback.

Thanks for the specs pmsayre153.

The Shadow Scout's handle is too short for my medium/small hands. I sold mine.

I second the Skinny ASH

I have a SJTAC and while it is a great knife and works well as an all arounder I would say that there are better Busses for what it sounds like you are looking for. The SJTAC has a long blade that tappers to a point and is not very blade heavy. I would say that it is better suited to combat tasks like stabbing and slashing. The ASH in any variation would make a better all around camp knife in my opinion.

I've owned both and now only own the SJTAC - the one Busse I will never sell. The Fehrman's are great, nice steel, great heat treat but I found the Busse easier to sharpen, it has better balance and does both small jobs and larger jobs. While the SS is a wolf in sheeps clothing the SJTAC is just a prefect knife. If you can only have 1 Busse a SJTAC would be my recommendation.

I don't regret selling my Fehrman even they are really nice, INFI is just amazing stuff. Best way I can explain it is like butter metal, it's so malleable which makes for easier sharpening and a try and break me feel to it (I tried and can't). Once you've bashed it to bits, you can get a hair popping edge back in no time.

Thing I like about the SJTAC is that it is not too thick like some of the other Busse knives. Just perfect. SJTAC gets my vote :thumbup:

I can't speak for Fehrman as I don't own any of their knives but I do own a good number of various Busse models. Concerning the CG SJTAC (I currently own 4 of them in variations) I think it is an exceptional knife for all around camping/tactical/combat applications. It is much faster in the hand than the Skinny ASH-1 let alone the CG ASH-1! It is also lighter. Granted the CG ASH-1 as well as the Skinny ASH-1 are fantastic blades and in my opinion they fall in between the CG SJTAC and the bigger choppers. If weight consideration is a factor, I suggest you go with the CG SJTAC otherwise, you may opt to go with either of the ASH-1's. As for the NMSFNO, I think this falls into the chopper category as I don't consider it as a general purpose knife and this comes from someone who likes big blades.

SUFLER!

If you want a nmsfno. You better jump on it. Last week they had green&black, black&black, sage&tan, sage&black.

Now! Sage&black. A very good knife. If you get one you won't be able to put it down.
