Busse-speak

It relates to the thickness of the blade stock.

Here is a good reference to what thicknesses have been available.

If you google busse collector you should find the catalog with thicknesses listed.

FAT usually a thicker version of a model already made and anorexic is a thinner model of a model that is already made. I believe ASH is the Anniversary Steel Heart. So the model in question would be a thicker version of an Anniversary Steel heart....I'm sure some pros will be along to clear up what I missed

FAT = Usually means a thicker blade

Skinny = Usually means a thinner blade

NM = Nuclear Meltdown treatment, meaning all the hard edges of the blade (except the cutting edge itself) like the guards and spine and stuff are rounded off instead of retaining sharp angles

HOG = Either "hog" like the animal referring to the Busse fans here, or Heavy Ordnance Grade which can mean a heavy duty thick knife sorta like FAT

BIG = Busse Industrial Grade finish, it's a rough satin (rather than the mirror shine satin) that is similar to competition finish but finer

CF = Competition finish, which is below a BIG satin finish in how fine it is. These knives usually show tool marks and are basically just roughly polished uncoated blades. discontinued.

DC = Doublecut which is like a greyish bead blasted finish on uncoated blades

SH = Usually means "Steel Heart" of some sort which is a model of Busse knife (usually seen in ASH)

B = Usually equals basic which refers to a specific design of Busse knives which use Res-C (the rubber ones) handles called the "basic" handles, usually you'll see it in like B11 or most recently B8 (since the Basic 8 is the new one)

Hope that helps a little. There's a lot more and it just takes some time to learn them all.

The blade on the fat ASH-1 is .32" thick. It seems that fat Busse blades are usually right around 5/16" thick.

md02geist, That is a good list of Busse terminology you started. Sometimes "SH" also means straight handle, like SHBA (straight handle Badger Attack) or SHSHII (straight handle Steel Heart II).

A FAT ASH-1 is an ASH-1 that is .320" thick. There was also the Skinny ASH-1, that is .190" thick and the Original ASH-1 LE (Limited Edition) that was .220" thick.
The Busse language is definitely a little difficult to grasp at times. . . It took me a long time to get the hang of it all and I am still learning. ;)

Yeah very true SH can also mean straight handle, you're absolutely right.

It means don't be standing right behind her when she bends over... oh, oops, that's an h, not an s. In that case the previous replies were more appropriate. :p

If you want to get really technical, the knife referred to as a "Fat ASH-1" is really just a standard CG ASH-1, which was 0.320" thick, and seems to have picked up the moniker "Fat" to distinguish it from the "Skinny ASH-1" that came out later.

And in case you were wondering, "CG"=Combat Grade, which basically means the standard, non-custom shop, non-limited edition version. They're usually coated blades, but are sometimes seen with other finishes like Double Cut.

For instance, the one on top is a CG ASH-1 with black canvas Micarta and a Double Cut finish. It would now typically be referred to as a "Fat ASH-1," although in reality is was just the standard CG edition when I ordered it off the Busse website. The DC finish was available as an $80 option at the time.

The one on the bottom is a stripped "HOG Edition ASH-1," which is also 0.320" thick. In this case, "HOG" meant that it was a special edition available only to inducted Hogs (in the sense of people who spend way too much time on this forum and way too much money on Busse knives and have been officially blessed by Jerry), although in the context of other knives of a similar thickness, it might have meant "Heavy Ordnance Grade."
