Hello fellow Hogs and Hogettes,

Tonight I bring to you a question; how to store a GRAIL Busse?

Last Christmas my GF was amazing and surprised me with my Grail; a skinny ASH with hand-shaped Pumpkin G10 Mags!!! I know she is great (the year before she gave me a Waki)! This knife is more functional art to me and I am looking for a storage solution to keep it looking as good as it can for the rest of my life. Recently I notice some rust forming on some of my higher carbon blades so I bought a Pelican box and popped them in it with some silica gel. Since my ASH is my Grail I thought I would pop it in the Pelican box for a little extra protection. The other day I pulled my ASH out to have a look and I noticed that the G10 was drying out a little; the edges of each layer were turning slightly white!

So, here is my question; what is the best way to store your Grail Busses?

I appreciate any help and thanks for your time.

Alex

My grails go in the same drawer as the users but then I'm a grail SMASHING piglet!!!:eek::cool:

You can send them to me for proper storage - I will even pay for shipping. I promise they will be kept safe :D

Honestly, I usually just wipe them down with mineral oil and throw them in the same plastic storage bin as my users...

If you want to get REALLY safe, you can wipe them down and buy those silicon-impregnated gun socks that keep moisture out - I use them for my stainless revolvers for storage - cheap and effective:

Those girls sound like a keepers, by the way (your ASH and your GF :D)

Mine, all (grails & users) hang vertically by lanyard from grip (to keep pressure off the sheath) between the long guns in my safe on the rounded gun dividers. That way there's never any loosening of the kydex or stretching of the leather, like if I was to hang them by the sheath. The guns all lean a bit, & the knives hang vertical, so there's no chance of them banging each other. Works out real nice.

You really can't hurt G-10 my friend!!! Do like TrailWolf suggest and all will be fine, or if you hang it like a ham just wipe it down with oil and it's all good...

THE CHEST OF THINE ENEMY!!!!.......Oh , sorry wrong thread. IN PVC PIPE FILLED WITH MOTOR OIL AND BURIED!!!!!......Oh , sorry wrong forum. ON A VELVET PILLOW WITH CANDLES AND ROMANTIC MUSIC!!!!!!!!!..........I give up.

A couple of rolling tool chests work just fine for me!;)

Same here. Tool chests for fixed blades and Pelican cases for folders. I oil / lubricate them before storage and do not store them in sheaths.

I used to store my small / medium fixed blades in Pelican cases also and still use them when I travel / transport so that is an option. There are also many different pouches you can buy. I can't recommend any specifically because I have not used any. You can also build / buy a display case if you want to display it.

Whatever you do, do *NOT* lay your steel against cotton (or any other hygroscopic or hydrophilic material), since if they get wet the material's water-retaining property will hold the water against the steel, allowing the water to react with the steel causing rust. Instead, use hydrophobic fabrics like nylon, polar fleece, or the currently omnipresent micro-fiber fabric cloths marketed for cleaning/dusting.

For rust prevention, consider using Lie-Nielsen Uniwrap, a paper treated with a volatile corrosion inhibitor. The cost is $1 per 12"x24" sheet, but they sell it in 10-sheet pack. They pack their high $$$ planes in Uniwrap for shipping. Now cast iron planes will rust at a thought. I'll vouch that this stuff works, even in the Great Northwet.

My SWAG is that your G10 blush issue is some sort of reaction with the silica gel, although I have no chemical basis for that suspicion. Frankly I'm sort of surprised that you see what you describe, given that G10 is glass and epoxy resin, both of which are pretty passive materials.

HTH.

Another alternative is a french-fitted box, which can be scaled to fit as many knives as you like.
