Busse vs. Cold Steel

Recently I contacted Cold Steel concerning a performance contest between Bowie Blades made by these two companies. Cold Steel replied that the results of the tests were private and would not confirm results. Likewise, Busse would not confirm that Cold Steel was in fact defeated by thier blade. Does anybody know the results of those tests?

Busse Combat's policy is to only publish the results that we obtain with our own knives. Publishing our test results of another manufacturer would be unfair and would appear highly suspect. We are often thrown into comparisons with either Cold Steel or Mad Dog knives. I consider this to be a compliment. I own and have owned several of each manufacturer’s knives. They both make excellent blades, as do many others in the cutlery industry.

If anyone making high performance cutlery does not feel that they are making the best product on the market then they should get out and make room for those whose pursuit of performance is never ending. Busse Combat, Cold Steel, Mad Dog, and a host of other performance leaders will not lie silent. Thank God! If apathy hits our industry’s performance knife leaders then mediocrity will reign and the consumer will suffer.

You will certainly own many knives in your lifetime. If you can count blades from Busse Combat, Cold Steel, and Mad Dog among them, then you can rest assured that you have owned knives that top the list.

The facts are simple.

If you are looking for a fixed blade knife below $100 get a Cold Steel knife. They are really KICK ASS for the money and I have said this for years and even when I helped them moderate their own forum.

Hype or not, Cold Steel is an excellent product.

Now for over the $100 mark you will need to start looking towards Busse.

Here are links to 2 of my tests. http://www.bladeforums.com/tests/ http://www.bladeforums.com/magazine/trial/

I told both Jerry and Lynn, in front of each other, that I would be testing their knives directly against each other. Either way I would post the results.

INFI rules baby!

The Cold Steel Trailmaster in Carbon V is a very excellent knife. I've used it and relied on it for years in a variety of circumstances. Although it does rust too easily and many people have noted problems with the Kraton handle and the sheath, if you change the sheath and maybe wear a glove for prolonged chopping, it is a wonderful and versatile knife. In one respect it's really superd;its lightness and quickness may be superior to the BM. But even though I don't have the same kind of experience with my Busses, yet, the assymetrical edge geometry, the handle and, most of all, the Infi are absolutely incredible. I'm a believer. For me, the real comparison [in terms of performance]isn't with Cold Steel: it's with the next tranche up, customs like George Tichbourne's monsters or even my Hayes forged 52100. Even comparing them to a Wally Hayes shows I think the Busses are scary good. For me the test will be my next major trip up north where I'll live with the knife and depend on it for a few weeks. If only we could get a BM or Steelheart with a temperline and a carved wood handle, and Jerry's signature...

I rest my case. Frequently and in Jerry's absence, I have claimed you to be a gentleman. You have never ever said anything bad about any other makers and I now rest my case.

If you have to proof your worth by running others down, you are not destined for great things !!!

I my self have been a big fan of Cold Steel for years now. I don't think they make a fixed blade I wouldn't buy. I own every tanto model and some of the other fixed blades. I am now just coming into a chance to own a Battle Mistress. I am excited to see how she performs. But just like Jerry said if you have any one of these fine knives consider yourself fortunate and know that you have a knife you can depend on. I was pleased to see that Jerry spoke well of Cold steel and the fact that he welcomes the competition shows me that I can rest easy buying a Battle Mistress as well.

I am always looking for a better blades and that includes something to replace my Battle Mistress. I have blades that can outperform it in certain areas, and steels that will outperform INFI in certain aspects as well, but nothing that I would pick as an overall better knife or an overall better steel. Right now I am working with a medium sized 3V blade and depending on how that turns out will probably get a blade crafted out of it similar to the Battle Mistress to see if I can retire it.

However, back to the original point, Cold Steel and Kevin McClung do not make blades that come close to the INFI Busse Combat blades. The steels are weaker, more fragile and rust faster. I snapped about 7 cm off of a Trailmaster with no great effort, chipped the edge out on bone, could rotate the grip with my hand, broke one TUSK in half, bent another and later broke larger finger nail pieces out of its edge.

Busse Combat makes *heavy* duty blades. Stepping up to the plate against them is making a very large step indeed and usually does not bode well for the other blade.
