Hey Everyone,

I was laying in bed last night dreaming of knives and a thought occurred. My friend bought the SOG Seal Knife when it first came out and they made a HUGE deal about how nice and tough it was. I personally wasn't impressed with the knife but I in turn wanted to know what you guys think. So whattaya think? How do you think the SOG Seal Knife measures up to Busse knives?

Blade-Addict, Let me start by saying that I have a SOG Tigershark and I like it for its intended purpose and price point. Let me also say that my dealing with the people at SOG has been favorable. Let me also say that Jerry does not appreciate us dissing anyone or anyone's products here. Frankly, that suits me just fine as I do not cotton to that type of atmosphere when I relax here and BS about knives with the good folk who hang here. With all of that said, please allow me, with all due respect, to respond as follows:

ARE YOU KIDDING????????

All kidding aside, there truly is no comparison. I have a Dodge Ram, I like my Dodge Ram. My Dodge Ram is a good truck at it's price-point and for its intended purpose. I would not compare it to an Oshkosh!

Brothers....I have owned this SOG knife and now owning a Busse, or 2....the Busse kicks it's A$$...

The Seal was a bastid to sharpen, similar to Gerber LMF's etc etc.

I sharpened my NO the other day (stropping), and it came up razor sharp again! ...if it was ever blunted during use which I have my doubts..:D

If your buddy likes the SOG and it works for his purposes, who am I to tell him it's not the right knife for him?? Because in his mind it is the right knife. As much as I appreciate and like Busse knives, I recognize that not everybody in the world will agree with my opinion on that. That's okay. It keeps market pressure on Jerry's production (and the prices for it) down to levels where I can afford to actually buy his work. I can't say that about all the blade makers whose work I admire. ;)

I think the observation about price points is germaine to comparing this knife with Busses - i.e. the SOG SEAL costs around $100 and Busse combat grade blades of approximately equivalent size run in the $300 range. That is hardly an apples-to-apples comparison.

I would defer to Cliff Stamp's work with SOG and Busse knives for a more empirical answer to how the steels/geometries/heat-treats of the knives compare, since he has more experience working with both brands than I do. Unfortunately, I have no experience with SOG knives, only their Para-Tool, which I like well enough as a needle nosed pliers to make it part of my EDC.

I'm relatively new to Busse but I gots me a Basic 7, Badger Attack, Assault Shaker, ZT/NO and a Basic 9 from Eric at Normark on the way.

I'm selling my SOG Seal and a buncha other stuff.

'nuff said.

It's not really a fair comparison based simply on the price point alone. The SOG products are great and the people from SOG are some of the best in the business. If you compare them to other knives in their class, you will do very well to choose the SOG product.

Blade-Addict :

How do you think the SOG Seal Knife measures up to Busse knives?

I have used the SOG SEAL, Recondo, and X-Ray Vision, Busse Basic #7, and Battle Mistress (old style). The Busse blades offer higher performance steel (wear resistance, strength, durability), higher performance edge geometry (cutting ability), more ergonomic handles, and stand behind their blades much better. There are also large differences in their representatives on the forums, however that is an issue of people and not specifically knives.

More specific info on the knives can be found in the various threads in the Reviews forum, such as the following where I give a short overview of 7" blades including the Basic #7 and the SOG SEAL :

its near the end of the thread, on the second page if you have the thread lengths at the default. Any specific questions just ask.

I've owned many SOG knives over the years from the Seal 2000 to the Bowie. None of them ever let me down or failed to perform. As jerry mentioned Busse and SOG are really in two different markets. However I would not hesitate to recommend SOG to anyone.

Which do I prefer though? Busse :)
