Got to thinking today about how old school A2 would compare to SR101. Any thoughts on this? Seeing as A2 is pretty common tool steel why doesnt Busse use it for any of the other lines? Are 52100(SR101) and S7(SR77) simply better performing than what busse was able to get out of A2 steel? I would assume Busse is using the best available steels for their purposes. Why then is A2 left out? Just curious what the consensus is on this. I dont own any older busses in a2 but I have plenty of SR101 and SR77 blades. Where do you all think A2 ranks in the heiarchy? Thanx for any imput guys and girls!

A2 is pretty expensive; might be SR-101 and S-77 are more cost-effective.

52100 isn't cheap, at least at what I have been able to quote it at. I would say cost wise it might be on par with A2. And S7 isn't far behind them either.

Perhaps the BOSS or Garh would care to chime in? Really curious what the official take on this is. Considering what the prices for old school A2 are I would like to know how it fairs against the newer production steels.

The A2 is what founded the reputation we have all come to know and love. They held the same warranty and with the Busse heat treat I have no doubts of A2. I have not been able to discern any significant difference. I'm no ex spurt but unless you are quantifying data like Cliff or the polar opposite Noss, most wouldn't notice a difference.

I've often wondered this myself. a person asked me once about it, and I told them INFI was the best "and most expensive" while SR101 was probably comparable to the first Busses in A2 Steel, then came scrap yards.. but I am probably wrong... because SW uses SR101 instead of A2, which says something.
whats the difference in A2 and D2?

R2-D2 Trumps them both........

The same could be asked of D2, the Busse-Kin family have really been able to bring out the best in D2 but seldom use it.

I forgot about D2. I wonder about how that fairs as well. Great steel in the folders i have.
I am guessing that both SR101 and SR77 trump A2. Else why not use it at all?
I do however love it in the barkies I have.

Hmm, it would be interesting to see where 52100 falls on that chart. All I can say is that the SR-101 on my Rats holds a dang scary edge for quite a long time! Seems to do better than the couple of Benchmade D2 knives I have by a fair margin. The Rodent Solution, in particular, has really impressed me.
