Busses and Salt-Water?

A buddy invited me to do some Striper fishing on his boat yesterday. Being the gracious guy I am I accepted his offer. I wanted to bring along some Infi to aid in the process of converting him to Busse excellence, but I wasn't sure about whether salt water would have any ill effects on the knives. My assumption was that all would be fine, but I didn't want to learn the hard way.
I'd appreciate any input from Hogs who have used your Infi in and around salt water and what your experience has been. Thanks!

If the original coating is still intact, there will be few problems. A buffed out busse product will rust if not oiled down properly. I am curious as to your concept of 'conversion'. Most fishing folk use thinner fillet style blades which are more commonly seen and used in fishing ventures. I've also never heard of a busse product being used on a commercial fishing rig.

Thanks for the links, guys. Sort of what I thought would be the case, but glad to read it from experience.

The guide is a fairly new friend and I've been singing the praises of Infi as he is also a big hunter. I just figured if he held a razor sharp Warden and gave it a whirl on a Striper it would make him hungry to get the Busse Fillet knives and a good skinning knife...then a chopper, an EDC....you know how it goes.

So you are an enabler, starting him on the very slippery slope into the INFI trough....;)

I took my Tigerwarden out with me a couple of weeks ago when i went crabbing. Within a couple of hours it had rust forming around the Talon hole and around the Busse Combat logo something to be aware of . Did`nt get any salt water immersion in that time either .

I took my BATAC and an SS4 kayaking a couple of weeks ago in the gulf around 10,000 Islands and (near) Everglades National Park.

It rained the whole time and I was only there for a day and a half. The SS4 was on my hip in a kydex sheath and the BATAC was mostly in my dry bag in a spec ops sheath.

The SS4 was soaked and used plenty cutting food, wood, ropes, fishing line, and bait. I wiped it down after every use with a marine tuf-cloth. I had no problems whatsoever after the trip. I rinsed and cleaned it after my trip and put it back in the sheath (that I thought was dry and I forgot to rinse it out). I had a small amount of brownish stuff on the edge of the polished spine next to the coating. It rubbed off with my fingernail, and now looks as good as new.

The key around salt water is to keep it clean and well protected when not in use. If in the swamp or gulf I usually pour a little mineral oil in the kydex sheaths, wipe and rinse the knife in non-salt water whenever possible.

I have not taken any completely bare infi blades in the saltwater.

As a Marine Patrol guy in Charleston and a proud HOG, I can tell you first hand that my collection of Busse Knives have all spent some time in the saltwater environment and have all performed well with no corrosion issues. Like all guns that I'm aware of, knives need to be heavily oiled as well in the salt environment. H1 steel is the only thing i know of that will not corrode. But I'd take infi any day over H1. Hope that helped.
