Busse's for water?

I posted a suggestion thread on the general forums concerning a recommended knife steel for carrying on a three day canoe trip on a fresh water river. I was looking at the H-1 and X15 steels, because I thought they would hold up well while swimming/wading and being secured in a wet sheath with no maintenance for three days. Then I thought to myself, s#*t... I have Busse's....I would love to carry my Badger or Active Duty.

Does anybody have any reports of using their busse in a water environment. I would think the crinkle coat would hold up well, but I was concerned about the handle and edge. Aren't the handles secured with glue along with the additional rivets? Would the edge rust to the point of leaving brown marks on cutting surfaces? Your thoughts?

Those slabs aren't going anywhere if they are the tube style. They are there for the long haul and water will not effect them. If your slabs are micarta or G10, water is also a non issue with them. If you blade is coated (even if it isn't) I doubt you'll have any problems with fresh water. If you want to take out a little insurance, a quick wipe with Marine Tuff cloth will give any exposed steel plenty of protection. If you are going to prep food with it, use mineral oil.

I've heard of people using them for scuba... I would think that with a little marine tuff cloth or grease/wax you'd be rockin and rollin.

I think H-1 is a better choice if you dont want to have to worry about it rusting. If you need something thats tough first and rusting is your second priority I think you can go wrong with Busse.

Busse's do fine around water :p I've put a stripped SHBM away wet in the sheath and left it like that for a few days before coming back to it. It had some orange stuff covering much of the blade....looked like rust at first but it wiped off with dish soap and a scrub pad! Short term water exposure won't do anything. The patina I have on my Cultie is from eating steak....salt water didn't do anything.

I have a SAR5 sitting in a soaking wet sheath right now.

:eek:folks soak em in paint remover:eek:

I don't see water hurtin em:confused:

My vote is to get some sort of Spyderco Salt in H-1. You won't have to worry as much about loss, and H-1 will not rust. Period.

Then, come home and buy a Busse.

i use my busses in and around salt water all the time. i swam in the ocean last wednesday with my beater half coated skelly warden on my belt in leather. started drinking on the way home, forgot about it til the crack of noon the next day. pulled it out, tiny bit of staining on the edge. 2 strokes on leather strop and it was good to go. rinsed the sheath and knife in freshwater and put em away wet no worries. USE EM!!!

yea! use it!
as long as you take care of your gear it will hold up a looooong time!
just wipe the blade with a cloth or against your pants after getting it wet and nothing will happen..

and an other great tip for getting these stains is toothpaste and a tooth brush.

gentle enough to not scratch the blade, butt abrasive enough to get the stains away.

Ask Cobalt about the SHBM that is in the bottom of the Chesapeake.

Take a Spyderco.
