Edit... Title should read 'burnt out'. Darn autocorrect...

Hi all.

Picked up the blade grinding attachment and was just beginning to get the hang of it. A little tricky compared to the stock guide, but I see its promise.

Attached the leather belt (what a tight fit) conditioned it with the supplied lube, and polished the edge on one knife at a slow speed.

After a few minutes of use I smelt burning and saw the magic smoke escape. And everyone knows that once the magic smoke escapes, you can't get it back in.

So are these things field repairable? It's still under warranty.

Thanks,
Jason.

Get ahold of them and they will ship you a new one right away and have you cut the cord off of the old one and then ship the cord back in a prepaid envelope that comes with the new one. At least that is what they did for me.

Yup, they're a helpful group... just give them a call.

My guess would be that you maybe just got a defective unit? I've run my with the BGA pretty much since I got it, including the leather belt, (and yes it fits tight, but I think that's a benefit) without any problems. Only other thing I can think of is maybe it wasn't tracking true and adding additional load to the motor,,, just something you might double check.

Hi guys,

So glad you called us right away to sort this out. We are here to help.

Please use medium speed and low tension when using the leather belt.
Leather creates more drag on the motor (heat) than the standard belts.
And since the motor fan is on the drive shaft, it needs a higher speed to properly cool.
Also be sure to not over tension the belt since this also increases motor strain.
If you want less belt deflection use the 'narrow' pulley distance vs. adjusting the belt tensioning mechanism.

Don't hesitate to call or email us with questions guys, we are happy to help.

This was probably the issue, as it died while I was dressing the belt with the supplied petroleum jelly.

As an aside, the ridge on the drive pulley cuts deep into the leather belt. Is that normal?

Darex rocks!

That is created by the o-ring on the drive shaft. We place it there to help with belt tracking.
If you want, you can simply remove it from the shaft to reduce that center bead / groove created on your belt.

Stay sharp out there!
