...but what if I need a different knife?

So, I have my knife. My Becker BK-2 Companion is my go-to knife most of my time afield. However, I am interested in what to keep in my pack as my 2nd knife. Right now I don't really have a good one and I usually pick either an old Gerber folding Mini Gator, a Case Stockman, or an older Leatherman PSTII multitool.

My goal is to have a knife that is usefull for smaller projects like filleting fish or detailed-ish carving, and could also be relied upon if my primary knife failed or was lost. (I don't know what must be going on in the universe for my BK-2 to fail, but you know what I mean.)

Also, its just time for a new knife. I've got the itch.

I have been looking at something like a Becker BK-11 Necker or BK-14 Remora. An Opinel No. 8 also seems like a decent choice. A Leatherman multi-tool may be the way to go, I guess. Swiss Army Knife?

Now to my question: What is your second knife and how do you usually use it? Any thoughts on filling the role with one of the knives I mentioned?

put a warden in the pack for field use. planing on a leatherman Tti once they are available again. this should be enough knife for the field. was thinking of a large chopper but the additional weight couldn't be justified

Check out Moras. I always bring one with me. They are so light you wont notice them and I never thought 15 dollars could buy so much knife. I use mine for any detail work i need to do like very controlled carving. I can't say more good things about Moras. I have the 731 and have batoned it through several logs with no problem and it holds an edge very well. Great knife.

Keep the BK11/14 around your neck and a Mora in the pack. I didnt understand the hype of the Moras until I got one. My Mora classic is now my dedicated to kitchen use. I got the Mora Companion for outside use.

Also, go over to the Becker forum and look at the sticky threads. Read through the tweener sticky!

Well, your BK2 can and will do some pretty detailed stuff...

... for cleaning large game, etc. I prefer my BK11, but for detailed work, the BK2 is just more comfortable (IMO). You also mentioned SAKs I think. Can't go wrong with something like a Huntsman - I use mine all the time - even when I'm carrying my BK2 (or BK9).

Depending on what I'm doing I sometimes don't have a backup knife but when I do it's either an Izula 2, SAK soldier, or a mora. Both fixed blades(with sheath) are right around 4 ounces and the SAK a little less then that.

You already have a smaller "good" knife to do the things you mentioned, the humble Case Stockman.

Mora.

Love those things and they make a great companion for your Campanion. :D

Or, a BK14/BK11/Izula is a nice choice to.

Don't forget about SAK, I never leave home without my RuckSack.

Lots of choices, lots and lots and lots......

I like knives, really I do. :D
