Butane lighters banned from airliners

Well, if you can smoke on the planes anyway, why do you really need them?

On the other hand, with the pressurized can of fuel, you would not be able to carry a butane lighter in your checked luggage, meaning you are out of luck when you reach your destination. Lame.

That's stupid, when I tried to bring home 1000 butane lighters from Taiwan in my checked luggage they said the lighters would be like little bombs as the pressure differential in the cargo area would make the gas expand like crazy in the lighters and probably rupture the blow off valve.

Just a couple more congressman trying to get their names in the paper as being "tough on terrorism" rather than providing inspired leadership and management as they are being paid to do.

Or maybe I'm missing the point of their valuable contribution in the war against terrorism because it doesn't make me immediately feel "safer".

Idunno...

Back in 96 when I joined Air Cadets we weren't allowed butane lighters in the aircraft, they didn't even like em in the hanger or on the airstrip.

doesn't suprise me that civilian has finally caught up with military rules.

thats why I carry a zippo... non pressurized.

I just got off a 21 hour flight; 12 hours on one leg and 6 on another with a 3 hour layover and I guarantee you that the smoking rooms in Taiwan, Jakarta and Singapore were full. Of course you have to realize that what applies to the US doesn't necessarily apply to any other country.

I mean you don't need them on the plane, but if you can't check them either then what are you supposed to do?

Quit smoking :D or buy a Zippo. My Doc made me quit smoking because of blood pressure. :grumpy: Been a year and I still miss it :(

I applaud the anti-terrorist cause but man, if i was going to blow up a plane and managed to sneak explosive onboard i surely wouldn't be lighting it up with a friggin lighter. There are far bigger problems to deal with than stupid lighters. A blasting cap coudl be sneaked through easily and it doesn't give anybody the "damm*t i need to heat it up first before it blows" kind of response time the passengers had to owerpower that chump. How about focusing on real issues rather than making big fuss about marginably usable items ? What's next, a ban of ties (the thing one wears aroudn their neck) and shoelaces ?
