Have any of you folks ever used one of the small butane torches as a last resort for getting a campfire started? I'm looking at the Blazer GB-4001 as a option for when stuff absolutely has to get set of fire.

I use a bernzomatic with MAP gas.

im sure its over kill but it lights anything in seconds. Most of the time I use flint strikers, but ya know.

Butane is worthless in low temps .

+1 on that. I bought one of those ridiculously expensive "all weather" waterproof, windproof butane lighters and I loved it at first; thought it was a great emergency tool. Right up until I pulled it out in the middle of winter and I couldn't get it to light....

A butane lighter kept in an inside pocket will work you need every thing ready to go before you get it out in freezing weather
If you need a fire NOW and your bic in in your backpack you are S.O.L.

Back in the day we used the small 15 min. road flares to start a fire in the freezing dark morning cold wet camps. Works like a champ! :)

I got a couple of the Orion Holy Hand Grenade fire starters last night. Have to get out somewhere safe and test one this weekend.

I saw Primus has a torch tip made especially for lighting fires

+1 on the emergency road flares. My neighbor just used one to start a campfire that expired in 1998 ... he got a huge supply free from the local school district, as they aren't allowed to keep them in the school busses once "expired." I keep several in each car, a great "dual-purpose item."
