Okay, who makes or have available those compasses that will plug right into the buttcap of the Chris Reeve fix blade line? Is it removable? Or is it permanently forced in? Thanks.

Triple Aught Design sells them. It's called the SAS Survival Compass. Mine is permanantly installed in the cap of my MK VI. I set it in the cap with epoxy and keep a small bit of foam rubber over it to prevent the contents of the handle from scratching it.

I suggest using a large cor. . . oops, your topic line had me confused a moment! :p What Remster said.

FYI-

The Penrith Combat Survival Kit I purchased from TAD came complete with an SAS Survival Compass in it--and the entire PCSK costs $24.95.

The SAS Survival Compass alone is $25.95.

They are exactly the same, I've closely examined both side-by-side.

Go figure. Anyway, I won't gurantee that your PCSK will come with the SAS-style compass; just passing along that mine did.

Hmm...perhaps TAD has repackaged their kits now. The mini "SAS" compass they (now?) sell (http://www.tripleaughtdesign.com/sas.htm) is clearly different from the one pictured in their "Penrith survival kit" (http://www.tripleaughtdesign.com/penrith.htm). I have only had experience with the "SAS" type one. The one in the kit does indeed seem to be the same kind as the one offered by BCB (http://www.bcbin.com/itm00518.htm).

FYI, the SAS Compass that came in my PCSK is this exact model:

NOT, the one pictured in the link to the PCSK http://www.tripleaughtdesign.com/penrith.htm.

YMMV.

Ken, Marble makes a small (1/2" diameter) compass that fits right in the buttcap. I've sold several of them. They come with either a white or black rose. Put a dab of silicone caulk in the cap and press the compass down into it. It will stay where you put it. (Use clear caulk....not too much.) The compasses retail for around $13.00. Since you're a dealer you should be able to order them from a wholesaler. I get mine from Blue Ridge. I would take a picture of the one I have left but I haven't been able to post pictures here anymore. If you want, I can e-mail you a picture tomorrow. Let me know.

I called and ordered 2 last year, and they had just been discontinued. You'll probably find some around, but the rep I spoke with on the phone said they were being discontinued because they being found to be seriously unreliable. She went on to say that they were hit and miss, and that sometimes they worked fine for people, but they'd had many complaints of inaccuracy, most likely due to the size...

Personally, I really respected her honesty, and bought 2 anyway! They even fit the smaller Mountaineer 1-sized caps.

Professor.

I understand GC. Did you order yours recently? I am just trying to see if I can make a somewhat educated guess as to whether they might still be including the SAS compass. I think both models are fine...but I prefer the one that you received (I also own one now). I will likely order a few of those kits (quite a deal) if TAD is shipping them with the SAS compass. Thanks GC for your tip!

I use a small compass from Sun Company for my Project 1.
You can find them here: http://www.premiumknives.com/ShopSite/Sun_Company_Compasses.html
I got the one made for putting on your watchband, and took it out of the plastic case. It fits perfectly in the 14mm recess in the cap. I destroyed the first one trying to take it out of it's plastic case, by stabbing it in the side when prying it out. For the second, I clipped the case apart with wire cutters and it came out a lot easier.

These look to be the same compasses that are put in the cap of a Randall 18, by the pictures I've seen. They seem to be accurate to me, but they are really small. They do seem better than the Marbles and SAS compasses, because they're liquid filled. The one I have jives perfectly with my regular Suunto map compass.

Thanks Professor. I must have gotten some from back stock at the distributor since I received them a couple of days before Christmas. We'll see what happens when I reorder today.

Unidork, you're right, those Sun compasses are the ones that have been used in the later Randall 18's. The earlier ones I've had had the Marbles compasses in them. The one I have now has something else that I haven't been able to identify but it seems to work ok.

Looks to me, the Sun model would be the way to go. That's probably where I'll get mine after the distributor runs out of the marbles.

Thanks for the offer Paul. If I get some time I"ll do it.

I just broke out the button compass I have in my personal survival kit. It is a modified Brunton #9065 (http://www.brunton.com/recreational_products/accessories_frameset.htm). My 'modification' was to break out the compass portion from the key ring. The result is a small, black, reasonably accurate, CHEAP, 14mm compass. I have not tried it, but it would likely fit in the recess of the large end caps. The bonus is that you can find these in sporting goods stores for about $5.00.
