Hey all,

I lurk here from time to time and wanted to say Hi.

Years ago my Dad, a knife collector and dealer, asked me "What do you think of Spydercos?" Being brought up with very traditional looking pocket knives, I said "I think they're butt ugly!" He just laughed and and said that he had bought up some of the older pieces to hang on to as he thought there was a real future in them.
Later I picked up one of the older style Merlins (before they were discontinued and brought back) at a gunshow for use at work. The usefulness and look of the thing grew on me. Now I like most of the designs and have a Spyderhawk AND a Gunting on the way :)
Taste change as you grow. Hell, I remeber when girls had "cooties"!

P.S. Now for a Persian, Shabaria, Matriarch, Dodo, Gunting trainer, .....

Welcome aboard. Spyderco's philosphy is "function first", that's why mot people reffer to them as ugly (or at least it was "function first", now that they introduced exotic materials and bolsters, I'm not so sure about that) ;)
But hey, "butt ugly" you say also when you see a lunar jeep... ;)

BTW, what's a "cootie" ?

"Cooties" (also spelled kooties) are technicallly lice. As children use the word, it means imaginary bugs (ie. "Girls are yucky."). As we know, not all girls have lice, not all girls are yucky, and not all Spydercos are butt ugly ;)

Now that I'm all growed up, I like Spydercos, though not as much as girls.

I guess I'm one of the bassackwards guys who thinks spydies are dead sexy. I always bought them because I thought they looked sweet. Everything else on the market seemed to lack that certain zing that Spyderco had. So I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder.

Yup they sure are bugly. If you want a knife for looking at get something else. If you want a knife for cutting, Spyderco is hard to beat.

function over form...
fugly.

catches your eye, and the ergos work.

want to guess why in 4yrs of spydies I've put cash down on about 40 of em? Given a fair share as gifts, but after this set of trading is done, I'll still have around 12-15.

I have to admit that when I first saw Spyderco knives and Glock pistols I thought they were both as ugly as sin. I think both products are quite similar in that they are concerned more with giving the consumer a product with better functional use than looks.

Now, Spyderco and Glock are my most favorite play toys. Only money keeps me from having more than I do now. Anyone got the winning numbers to the next Power Ball lottery?

Funny you brought up the "G" word. I hated the look of Glocks at first too. Dad favored traditional looking revolvers with shiny blue finishes and wood grips. I "inherited" the same aesthetic sense.

But now, my baby is a 23 w/ Tritium sights ;) I've tried more expensive things, but they just don't seem to do anything my G23 can't.
Glock: the Spyderco of handguns. LOL!

I inherited knife collecting from my father who (apparently) inherited knife collecting from his father. He collects old bone handled case pocket knives and I collect Spyderco. The "Ugly Black Knife" argument is one that we have all the time. He maintains that the beauty of the old pocket knives is the warmth and use of natural materials (and they are kind of nice don't get me wrong!). I always argue that the beauty of Spyderco is the ruthless adherence to overall function. Personally I don't think there will ever be an end to the debate. As for me, I will continue to carry "ugly Black Knives". :D

And as far as pistols go diablero the Walther P99 is tops in my book (sorry to jump off topic):p

Get your Dad a bone scaled Kiwi. It is a nearly perfect combination of new design with tried-and-true practice.

those natural-handled kiwis are quite lovely, in my opinion. furthermore, everyone who has seen my merlin has thought it was a thing of beauty-but i travel with a fairly eccentric crowd, so i'm not sure how useful my anecdotes are.

At one time I, too, thought Spydercos were ugly, until I actually held one. It was then that I discovered Spydercos are BADASS,screw beauty.
