I finally got this finished. My sister weaves/braids/ties rawhide and needs a skinner. Peter Nap's Butter Knife inspired me and I've been working on this:

hkr_skinner.jpg

Specs:
- Chisel-ground 1095 with differential HT, 400º initial temper, not-so-expert hand rub finish, and ferric etch.
- 416 Stainless bolster stud and Loveless bolt with a hidden pin near the tail of the handle.
- Canvas laminate made from Carhartt duck, denim, and West System. Mycar(hart)ta!

What you guys think?

That's a lot better looking than mine....
For a design that I came up with to keep from stabbing myself when I fell out of trees, it sure has gotten popular. I've given away 20 or so of those things since I first made the first one. Each person said it was the best skinner they ever had and then they all find other uses for them as well.

Nice knife. I love the way the grind line came out.

That's real tight. I can't immagine the PITA it must have been to do that crazy grind, much less hand-rubbing it after. The temper line is a real nice touch.

Thanks for all the kind words, guys. :D

What is the small stud for?

I'm calling that a "bolster stud". It's mant to deflect hard things, like bones, that over time could begin to wear on the leading edge of the handle scales.
