I spent a lot of time on the roof today 12,12 pitch. I was wearing my climbing harness because it's too steep to walk on and I was too lazy to put on roof jacks.

I hate roof work and while being bored to death, I remembered a knife design I've been putting off making.

It's for climbing...trees, rocks, roof whatever. I fall a lot, especially out of trees and depending on how I am harnessed, sometimes I have to cut the rope. I am always worried about falling on the knife.

Anyway the knife has a round point like a butterknife...I started to grind it tonight and realized that if I made it wider and sharpened the rounded point, it would make a good skinner.

It is 1 3/4" wide with a 4" blade. It's made from an Industrial hacksaw blade (Yours are on the way Gib) and I just ground the teeth so I still have the M2 edge and 1075 blade.

Tomorrow, I'll bead blast it, etch it to darken and coat it with OsPho to make it nearly rustproof.

Your description of your proposed skinner sounds exactly like the one I make...if I could figure out how to post a picture, I would. Best of luck with the design....

Yeah but will it spread peanut butter?

Why...yes it will Bruce. It will also pry and open beer bottles! :D

Hmmm... why not make a simple gut-hook-style knife with a rounded edge? That way you could zip through the webbing or rope with ease, and not risk injury from the pointed blade?

Peter, Great idea! Your sharp nose skinner sounds like some of the skinners from Knives Of Alaska, maybe their Brown Bear Cleaver: http://www.knivesofalaska.com/awards/awards.htm

As a smaller blade with a sharpened nose, they've got The Muskrat: http://www.knivesofalaska.com/muskrat/muskrat.htm

Great (creative) minds do think alike. :)

p.s. Looking forward to seeing the safety-rig butter knife.

That pattern is also found quite a bit on busy charter-fishing boats locally. The round nose allows for rapid scraping of the central "mudvein" when cleaning the fish. Shorter blade, and very effective.

Better to stay in the shop and make a "butter-spreader" than fall out of a tree or off a roof and spread yourself around Peter. Sounds cool, look forward to seeing it.
