I am interested to know the reason for the slot sometimes found on the top edge of the butter knife? Sometimes it is a fancy design and sometimes it is V shaped.

Thanks

I don't quite understand this... want to post a picture of your butter knife?

Are you talking about the cheese knife style with the fork end for serving???

It's to hold a small amount of butter in reserve.....unless you're making a peanut butter & jelly samwhich, in wich case, it holds small amounts of both ingrediants (perhaps a crumb or two from the bread as well) and you have the makings for a delicious, yet teensy weensy, peanut butter & jelly treat!

Happy as Cindy Crawford's bicycle seat to be able to help,

That possibility is interesting, however, I wonder if it is even close to the real reason....I will search for a pic or two and post them to the site to see if when observing the design, someone can figure out the reason. Of course it may just be a carry over from another time (before PB&J)and the purpose will only be known by a historian.

Pretty sure it is to act as a fork to spear the piece you just cut...

I know the item you mean. It is a cheese knife and yes it has a fork-like, turned up end used for grabbing the cut piece. The butter knife is a different situation. OK, seeing how there are some people really trying to help out, I will go on a search to get a pic of it.
Thanks
