are butterfly knifes legal in new york? i was about to buy 1 n my friend siad there illegal. are they n if so WHY????

In NY there is case law that says there are not gravity knives. You may still be charged with possession of a dangerous knife. NY does not allow them to be sold in mail order catogols here ( NY has sued those that do ) Also in NYC under 4 " knives can be carried, but they must concelled....not visible !!
