Hey all-

Do any of you know any custom knife/sword smith with any kind of experience making wing chun butterfly swords? I'm sick of looking at the cheap, flimsy crap that passes for butterfly swords. The only custom examples I've seen are here: http://www.wle.com/store/w_custom.html . They're just not right (made for hung ga, not wing chun); and, the'yre not forged. I'd be willing to pay a lot more for a good pair. I think the hardest part would be the guards, as they are traditionally cast from brass, as they need weight to offset the blade's weight.

Thanks-

Bo

Does indeed make butterfly swords; the their geometry is all wrong. Aside from being too long for me (the blade length should equal the user's inside forearm and hand), the handle is centered on the blade, instead of properly lining up with the spine. Here is a good explanation of the proper geometry, with diagrams: http://wcats.com/AboutButterfly.html

I just read the page and compared it to the Cold Steel site. It looks like another case of the weapon maker not training in the art of the weapon being made. We have the same problem in with getting real ninjutsu weapons such as shuko, shuriken, shoge, etc.

Put a post over in Shop Talk. I am sure that someone there can either do a pair or point you in the right direction. Good luck.
