I'm tired of button compass failures!! They start out great, eventually get a bubble that expands and gets to the point that the compass isn't reliable...

So is there a "GOOD" button compass out there?

What button compass(es) have you found to be the best?

Thanks!

You can find inexpensive button Dry compasses also. No bubble to fret about.

Tru-Nord though it may not be your idea of a button compass. I believe bestglide, com has some of the dry button compasses available.

i have a suunto clipper on my pack strap that i use for quick references. it works great and costs about 10 bux.

It's not a "button" compass, but the strap can be removed and it's about the same size. I've had excellent luck with Cammenga's wrist compass:

I was wearing mine in Afghanistan...a few knocks and bumps and it's held up better than I expected.

I have a 18mm brass button compass which I ended up mounting on a small wooden disk seems to do the job ok

pretty sure its dry too

Thanks guys!! With these leads I should be able to replace my button compasses with something reliable!!

I'm wondering if the liquid fails because of the cold. We can easily see -40*F here without the windchill at times and I tend to leave these in vehicles at one point or another! :o

I bought a Marbles brass button compass. I accidentally dropped it on my kitchen floor one day. The dail became hopelessly stuck, so I unscrewed it from the cheap case. And it was only a cheaply made compass. Very overpriced and heavy for what it is.

I also bought a new marbles compass, IMO it was junk. No abuse and in less than a month, pinned to my pack strap, it developed a bubble.

In the army we use dry compass', the ole tried and true lensatic. I am not suggesting a full size lensatic but I would like to try a quality dry small compass, think I will order one of the tru nords. Chris

+1 on the Suunto Clipper. I just went thru my "Nav" bin and laid all my compasses out. I ended throwing all my other button compasses away. The CLipper has never let me down.

Another vote for TRU NORD. I carry one in my canteen pouch.

I had the Nato button compass they are pricey but top notch, I mounted mine on top of my hiking staff and the constand tapping on the ground of the staff broke the compass (my bad). I would reccomend it for all other carry purposes.

Could anyone post an pic of suunto clipper on palm, maybe a bit from side that I could see the thickness? I'd appreciate it.

I had a Brunton compass fail and it never was outside of house.
Worked great when I got it in mail, gradually developed air bubble.
Some guy said he drilled and refilled his. Baby or watch oil??
china is on back of compass, if that means anything.
I thought Brunton was American made??
