Does any one know where I could get button type compasses small enough to mount in the handle end/butt of some wooden walking sticks I'm making? Ive tried the usual suspects,i.e County.comm,Goingear,etc. I only find watch band type with them. Thanx for any help and no off color comments about butt mounted compasses.:D--KV

The best ones, AFAIK, are the Francis Barker NATO Survival Compass (FB1605). They're expensive, but really tough and work well for such a small size compass. Google should bring you right to the place they sell it. Since I use a GPSr pretty much all the time I'm outside, this compass is my plan B navigation with a printed map of the area.

firesteel dot com has some 20-mm ones. Google "button compasses", probably get some good finds. Think amazon has some too. Luck.

I have had one of the NATO / SAS brass button compasses for about a year now. It was like $40, but it is great. It rides on my watch strap. The watch winds with motion, so I end up wiggling the thing around a lot. Even though there is no liquid in the compass, it handles this jostling/abuse just fine.

I got it from TAD gear.

I have a couple Tru-Nords too, in hiking staffs and as parts of a couple small kits, and I like them very much. You can also get them adjusted for declination in your area if you wish. Wanted to post earlier about them, but couldn't remember the name right off (Thanks Troy!).

Good luck,
Regan

Troy and Woodtroll -
Thanks for the Tru-Nord posts. I had never heard of them before. Based on their website (they look like a class act) and your recommendations I will be ordering one.

Those do look nice. They appear to be about the size of a quarter. The NATOs are dime-sized. For a something like a watchband application the size will matter. Just something to think about
