i am looking at pics of a Schrade SC500, a 5 1/4 in. folding hunter with a button on the bolster and scrimshaw of 2 bison. searching the scrimshaw page i see a similar knife, 1979, but no button. what does the button do ? assist openning, or lock the blade open ? the only other Scrades with a button i have seen have been much older, (other than recent post of double button). so is this a 1979 knife, and were many made with this feature ? was it used on other models as well (enough to make a collection ?).thanks, roland

Any chance of posting a picture..
I have not seen any SC's with a button.
Could be a conversion.

It looks like the bolster cap is missing, in one of the pics the bolster/button configuration is lower than the plane of the handle.

Rusty is correct.
Simply missing the bolster.
Would you say this is in "THIS IS ON OLD KNIFE BUT IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION"? I wouldnt.

I am with you Larry. Good condition........NOT!

Actually it isn't a difficult job to put a bolster on a knife. I have done several. It just takes time, patience, some nickle silver (or brass depending on the knife) and the knowledge of how to use a file. That is the simplified version, but it isn't too hard. However at $21.50 + $14.95 to ship it, that is about as high as I personally would go for that knife in good condition..........but I am not a big fan of the scrim Schrades.

thanks for the help guys. a bit of an expensive lesson, but there are so many variations of knives, i am probably not alone in making a few poor choices in the early years of collecting. and if it were straight forward it would not be half the fun. i'll see if i can fashion a bolster and then post before/after pics to provide folks with a chuckle.
