I plan on putting a tortoise shell overlay on a Spyderco (Gayle Bradley) Advocate. I was wondering if there is a particular reason most inlays/overlays I see use button head screws rather than flat head. Simply appearance?

Thanks,
Scott

Just a guess. The wedge shape of the flat head screw may split the shell material. Also you need a fairly deep countersink to hide the edges of the flat head. A button head screw in a shallow counterbore would put less stress on the handle material. There are many angles available in countersinks. Be sure to match the tool to the screw.

Thanks. That's the answer I was looking for and it all makes sense to me. Button head it is.
