Hey People,

Many years ago I bought my father a Point Man from Masters of Defense.

He EDC’s the knife and used it frequently at work (recently retired) and I’ve sharpened the knife many times now - to the point that the bevel is getting big and the knife will need the flats thinned soon (which will not look good in a bead-blasted blade). By the way, he typically opens the knife with a “gravity shake”

I also got him a Cold Steel Code 4 clip point several years ago that he’s used around the yard but that he felt was too large for EDC. Also as he gets older it’s probably not easy to close.

Anyway I’ve been looking around for a new EDC for him and found something that I think fits the bill but unfortunately is only currently available on the secondary for extremely inflated prices.

It’s the Pro-Tech/Ferrum Forge Mordax:

I was hoping there might be similar knives out there that I’m not aware of.

I’m actually aware of MANY similar knives but they tend to be made in China or are extremely expensive - both of which I’m avoiding.

Anything similar for under ~$300 or so???

I think one of the absolute smoothest and most under rated flippers is the Spartan Blades Pallas!!!!! My gosh they are smooth as hell!!! Awesome flipping and equally good thumb studs. I guarantee he will love it and it's not something everyone has. You can get the plain finish under $300 and the DLC coated directly at $300eyJidWNrZXQiOiAiZmlsZXMua25pZmVjZW50ZXIuY29tIiwia2V5IjogImtuaWZlY2VudGVyL3NwYXJ0YW4tYmxhZGVzL...jpeg

If you like the Mordax, you’ll like the Malibu. It’s basically a smaller version of it (in concept). I had a mordax but it’s a lot of knife. I love the reverse tanto malibus, very tough knives with a useful blade shape. Keep an eye out on the exchange, you’ll snag one for a deal eventually. There is a particular custom knife dealer based in Arizona that always has a few in stock as well.

If he's just "gravity" opening it, does it need to be a flipper? How about a Hogue EX-01?
Does it need to be a button lock? Anything with an axis lock can be opened in a similar way.
It doesn’t HAVE to be a flipper or button lock but I really like the finger guard aspect that the Mordax and many other flippers have and I want something easy to open and close.

A well done nested frame/liner lock would be fine (his Point Man has an amazing nested liner lock that’s rock solid after 15-20 years) but I don’t want a framelock where you need to avoid putting pressure on the lockbar…

Thanks to everyone for the ideas! Keep them coming!

The Demko ad20.5 is really nice if you don't need a flipper. It's made in Taiwan. Very easy to use lock (on mine at least). I have the version with CPM-3V with aftermarket scales.
That's a great suggestion - heavy duty, drop open and nice steel.

If you want something ugly there is always the hogue x5. Also x1, looks good but is small.

Edit: Also that SOG xr flipper

That Hogue X1 is nice but I don’t love the lines of the blades. At this point I’m leaning towards a Malibu if I can find one - those are almost identical in size to the knife he prefers.
